Off Every List Since 2020

This message is for a woman who has taken herself off every photograph, every group message and every list since the thing that happened at work in 2020

The desk is in the corner of the bedroom, under the window, and the lamp on it is the good kind, the warm kind, because Delia bought it in the first year and it was the one thing she did for herself that stuck.

It is a little after nine. The laptop is shut. There is a mug she has reheated twice and a pen with the cap chewed and a small stack of mail she will deal with on Saturday.

Her phone is face down. It has been face down since about 2020, in a manner of speaking.

She left the group message first. Not dramatically. She sat with it for two weeks and then chose the option that says leave, and the group carried on, and nobody asked, which she was relieved about for a day and then something else about for a long time after.

Then the photographs. She went back through five years of them and untagged herself in one long evening, and it took much less time than she expected, and afterward she washed her face and went to bed.

Then everything else. The alumni list. The Christmas card list she used to run for the whole department. The serving schedule at church, and then church, and then the smaller thing after church that meets in somebody's kitchen. Off, off, off. It took about seven months and by the end there was nothing left with her name on it that anybody could send anything to.

I am not going to describe what happened at work. It is hers, she has told the people she chose to tell, and a message that made her relive it in order to make a point would be doing the same thing to her that the thing did. So it stays where she put it.

What I will say is that she had reasons. Real ones. The kind that would stand up in front of anybody sensible. Delia is not a woman who ran from a small embarrassment. She is a woman who read a situation correctly and made herself hard to reach, and that was, at the time, exactly the right call.

It is five years on. She works from home now, and she is good at it. She goes to the store on Wednesdays. She calls her aunt Bettina every Thursday at eight, and has for four years, without missing one, and Bettina is seventy-nine and lives alone and the Thursday call is the thing she gets dressed for.

Nobody knows about the Thursday call. It is not on a list. There is no list.

At about half past nine Delia does the thing she does most evenings, which is to sit at that desk with the lamp on and think a sentence that has been sitting in her for a while now. It is not the sentence about work. It is a newer one, and it goes: I do not think anybody would notice if I stopped altogether.

The lamp is warm. The mug is cold again. Outside, somebody's car door.

The years the book does not call a failure

Everybody knows one line out of the book of Esther, and it usually arrives with a push behind it. Before we go near that line, look at what the same book says a chapter and a half earlier.

Esther was in the palace for years under an instruction to conceal who she was. Chapter two says twice that she had not shown her people or her kindred, because Mordecai told her not to, and Mordecai was the one who raised her and loved her and was walking past the courtyard every single day to find out how she was. Concealment was not her cowardice. It was her covering, arranged by somebody who wanted her alive.

The book does not treat those years as wasted. It does not call them a season of hiding she needed to repent of. They are just her life, and God is at work all the way through them without a word of complaint about her privacy.

You are not off the record, and there is no chapter of your life that God has filed as a retreat. Esther 2:20 is written down without an apology attached, and the Spirit does not reclassify a season of self protection as disobedience because five years have passed.

Now the famous line, read whole and slowly.

For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?Esther 4:14

Read the first half. Mordecai's own argument is that deliverance is not resting on Esther. If she says nothing, help comes from somewhere else. He is not putting the fate of a nation on one woman's willingness to be visible, and the last clause is a question, not an order. Who knows. It is wondering out loud, not issuing a target.

You have never been the load bearing wall in God's plan for anybody, and He has not been waiting on your visibility to move. Esther 4:14 says so in its own first sentence, deliverance arises from another place, and His Spirit does not hand a hurt woman a nation to carry.

Seen is not the same word as visible

There are two different things the word seen has been doing in your head, and pulling them apart is most of the work of this evening.

Visible is a public condition. It means findable, taggable, on the list, in the photograph, reachable by people who have not earned reaching you. Visible has a cost and you know exactly what the cost is, and you paid it once.

Seen is something else entirely. Seen is being known by somebody who was already looking and who does not need you to hold still for it.

There is a woman in Genesis who is out in the desert on her own, running from a house where she was badly treated, and she is the first person in Scripture to give God a name. Not a priest. Not a patriarch. A runaway servant with nobody at all in the world. And the name she gives Him is Thou God seest me.

You are seen tonight, at that desk, with the door shut, and it is costing you nothing. Genesis 16:13 put that name in the written record through a woman who had left everybody behind, and the same Spirit who met her out there is in your room with the lamp on.

So let me say the thing this category exists to say. I am not asking you to go back on a list. Not the group message, not the photographs, not the schedule, not the kitchen after church. Nobody here is going to call your quiet a failure of nerve, and if a message ever tells you that being loved by God requires you to make yourself findable again, close it.

The breakthrough

Here is what is true in that bedroom tonight, and none of it is a step.

You are lit by Christ, and no photograph was ever the wiring. John 8:12 puts the source in Him and the written word never once makes visibility the switch, and the same Spirit who lit it is the one keeping it, off every list, behind a shut door, in a corner under a warm lamp.

Which means the sentence you have been thinking at half past nine is not true. Somebody would notice. Bettina would notice on the first Thursday, and she would know by the second. It is already settled that you are known, and it was settled long before the year you came off everything. Psalm 139:2 says He knows your sitting down, written in the plainest possible language, and the Holy Spirit is saying it again over a desk, a mug and a chewed pen.

And the five years were not lost time. You were lit through every one of them, in a smaller room, with the light doing what light does whether or not anybody can find you online.

Declare this over yourself

You are not summoning anything here. Christ is in you, and every line below is agreement with what is already written rather than a bid for something new. What He does with your evenings, your Thursdays or your five years is His to decide, and He answers as He sees fit and in His timing. Say it out loud anyway, at your own volume, and let the Holy Spirit seat it in you.

  1. Bedroom desk at nine in the evening, you are not a smaller life. I sit here on purpose and Esther 4:14 says deliverance was never resting on one woman's exposure, so you keep the quiet and I will keep the light I did not light.
  2. Story I tell myself about disappearing, get out. You have been running in this room since I came off the lists, and in the name of Jesus you have no right to stay in a woman Christ has already lit.
  3. God, You are the One who sees me and Hagar had that name for You before any of us did, so I am not applying to be found tonight. I receive what is written over a shut door, and I am sitting here with my chin up and the lamp on.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
