Someone Was WarmedRuth 2:12

If A Single Line Landed

This message is for a woman who sang on a Sunday for years, stopped, and has never known whether a single line landed on anybody

The piano is against the wall between the window and the door, and it has been out of tune since the winter before last, and Sylvia knows exactly which three notes give it away.

The lid is down. There is a vase of dried flowers on top, and three photographs, and a coaster somebody left there in the spring.

It is about half past three on a Thursday afternoon and the sun has come round to the net curtains, which is the best hour in that room and always was.

Sylvia sang on a Sunday for nineteen years. Not solos, mostly. She was the second voice on the left, the one who found the harmony without being asked and held the whole middle of the sound together, and if you had taken her out of it you would have heard the hole immediately and not been able to say what it was.

Then there was the illness, and the surgery, and the voice that came back afterward was a different instrument in a way that was nobody's fault. She sat down for six months to let it settle. She did not go back up. Nobody made a fuss about it, which she asked for and got, and which she has felt strange about ever since.

That was six years ago in March.

Here is what she thinks about, in that chair, at half past three. Nineteen years. Call it nine hundred Sundays, allowing for the ones she missed. Somewhere over a thousand songs, most of them the same forty songs. And in nineteen years, and in the six since, not one person has ever said to her: that line got me through something.

Not one. She has checked her memory carefully, because she is not a woman who exaggerates. There were kind remarks about the choir. There was a card when she stopped. There was Pastor's wife saying we miss the sound, which was generous and was about the sound.

She is not bitter. That is the thing to understand about Sylvia. She is not sitting there wanting a plaque. What she has, quietly, at half past three on a Thursday, is a question with nothing to hang it on, and the question is: did any of it land anywhere at all, or was I making a noise in a room for nineteen years.

The coaster on the piano lid is from a place that closed. Down the road somebody is putting the trash out. The sun has moved off the carpet and onto the arm of the chair, and Sylvia has not opened the lid since her sister visited in April.

The report had already arrived

There is a woman in a field in Bethlehem who has no idea that anybody has noticed her.

Ruth is a foreigner, a widow, picking up what the harvesters drop, which is the lowest legal way to eat in that culture. She has no standing. She is not building a reputation. As far as she knows she is invisible, one bent back among the leftovers, and the whole strategy of her day is to gather enough barley that she and her mother in law can eat.

And then the owner of the field walks over and says something that would have knocked the breath out of her.

He tells her it has fully been shown to him, all that she has done for her mother in law since her husband died, and how she left her father and her mother and the land where she was born and came to a people she did not know. He has the whole story. Somebody told him. She has no idea who, and the book never says.

The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.Ruth 2:12

Look at what has been happening while Ruth was busy assuming nothing was happening. Her name had been traveling around Bethlehem for weeks. Her story was in people's mouths. It had reached a landowner she had never met, in enough detail that he could recite it back to her, and she found this out by accident, in a field, on a working day.

You are already the subject of a report you have never seen, and it was not waiting on your permission to travel. Ruth 2:11 puts the whole of it in writing, it hath fully been shewed me, and the Spirit who preserved that sentence is the one who arranges what carries and who hears it.

Notice too what Boaz does not do. He does not tell her who talked, or promise her more news, or hand her a list of everyone she has moved. He turns her toward the Lord and speaks about a reward from Him. The recompense sits with God. The report was a gift, and it arrived once, and it arrived late.

What a line does after it leaves you

Let me say the hard thing early so you know I am not building toward a trick.

I cannot promise you a phone call. Not from the man in the third row, not from a woman you have never met, not from anybody. I am not going to tell you that one day somebody comes up to you in a store and tells you what your harmony did for them in 2009, because I do not know that and I refuse to hand you a hope with nothing under it.

And I am not going to turn your not knowing into a spiritual exercise, either. This is not God testing whether you will keep singing without applause. Your six years of quiet is not a faith audit and it never was.

What I can tell you is what Scripture actually says happens to a thing you release. A word does not evaporate because you stopped tracking it. Isaiah 55:11 says His word does not come back empty, and a song carrying His word is subject to that sentence whether or not anybody reports back to the singer.

You have already landed on somebody, and the fact that nobody told you has no bearing on whether it happened. Isaiah 55:11 is written down without a receipt requirement attached, and His Spirit is the one who carries a line from a second alto on the left into a room you have never been in.

Think about what a Sunday actually is. A room of people, and in it, on any given week, a man whose marriage is quietly finished, a girl who has told nobody what happened, an older woman on her first Sunday since the funeral. They come in, they sit down, and the middle of a sound holds them up for four minutes.

They do not come and tell you. Almost nobody ever comes and tells anybody. Telling requires them to explain what they were carrying that morning, and most people will not do that, and the ones who might have meant to say it in the parking lot got caught by somebody else and drove home.

You were the middle of that sound for nineteen years, and the silence afterward is a fact about them and not about you. Ruth 2:12 promises a full reward from the God who saw the work, not a summary from the people who received it, and the same Spirit is holding that distinction steady over a room with a closed piano.

The breakthrough

So here is what is standing in that front room at half past three, and there is nothing in it for you to take up again.

You are lit by Christ, and the light was never on trial in the years nobody said anything. John 8:12 puts the source in Him and the written word never once ties the flame to feedback, and the same Spirit who filled a second voice on the left is the one still holding it.

Which means the question you have been carrying has an answer, and it is not the one you were braced for. Did any of it land. It landed. It is already done, and it was done at the time, in the room, while you were watching the words on the wall and worrying about the third verse. Ruth 2:11 says the report was complete before the woman knew a report existed, and the Holy Spirit is saying the same thing over you in a chair with the sun on the arm of it.

You are not owed a list and you are not going to get one, and that turns out to be a mercy, because a list would put the value of nineteen years in the hands of whoever happened to remember. The reward is with the One who saw all of it, including the Sundays you sang with a headache, and He has not mislaid any of it.

Declare this over yourself

None of this is you producing anything. Christ is in you, and the lines below are agreement with what is already written rather than a request for something new. Who was warmed and whether you ever hear about it is His to decide, and He answers as He sees fit and in His timing. Say them out loud in that room anyway, and let the Holy Spirit seat them.

  1. Piano with the lid down, you are not the record. Six years of quiet in this room proves nothing, and Ruth 2:12 says the reward comes from the One who saw, so you keep the silence and I will keep the light I did not light.
  2. Suspicion that I was only ever noise, get out. You have been sitting in that chair with me since March six years ago, and in the name of Jesus you have no right to stay in a woman Christ has already lit.
  3. Lord, You are the God who had the whole report before Ruth knew there was one, so I am not waiting on a phone call to know what my Sundays were worth. I receive what is written over work that was seen, and I am sitting here with my hands on the keys and the question laid down.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
