Never Put Out2 Corinthians 4:8

Learning To Laugh At The Right Moment

This message is for an office where the jokes at eleven o'clock are always about the same thing and you have learned to laugh at the right moment

The third floor is at its loudest around eleven, which is when the kettle goes on and four people end up standing by the printer at the same time, and Nadine has learned the whole shape of it the way you learn a bus route.

It starts with Craig. Craig is not cruel. Craig is funny, which is worse, because funny is a thing a room forgives. He does an impression. It is the same impression it has been for two years now, hands up, eyes closed, that voice, and then a punchline that is always about the same thing, which is people who believe.

And Nadine laughs.

Not a big laugh. She has refined it. It is the laugh of somebody who is mostly looking at their mug, timed a half second late so it reads as good humored rather than eager, and it costs her about two seconds and it gets her back to her desk without anything being about her.

She is forty-one. She has worked in that office nine years. Her badge photo is from the first week and she looks like a different person in it. There is a card in her top drawer from when her mother died, signed by all of them, Craig included, in handwriting that took him a while.

The thing she cannot explain to anybody is that she is not afraid of Craig. She could take Craig. What she cannot take is the drive home.

Because the drive home is where the accounting happens. Twenty-five minutes on the parkway and a name she calls herself somewhere around the second exit. Coward. Not out loud. Just handed to herself, quietly, the way you hand somebody their coat.

She has never once said anything at eleven o'clock. Nine years. And she has decided what that means about her, and the verdict has never been appealed, because who would she appeal to. Everybody at church would tell her she is fine. Everybody at work does not know there is a case.

At half past eleven the kettle has boiled again and somebody is asking about the quarterly numbers and the moment has closed over, the way it does, and Nadine is back at her screen. There is a woman two desks over named Priya whose father is in the hospital this month, and at about quarter to twelve Nadine will get up, without deciding to, and put a cup of tea down beside Priya's keyboard, and say nothing about it at all.

Nobody on that floor will register that. Priya will. For years.

Pressed is not the word crushed

There is a sentence Paul writes to Corinth that is doing something very specific, and it is almost always read as encouragement when it is actually a report.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:8, 9

Look at the structure. Every clause has two halves, and the second half is what did not happen. Pressed, not crushed. Perplexed, not in despair. Knocked down, not finished. Paul is not saying the pressure was imaginary or that he handled it beautifully. He is filing a report on the container: it took all of that, and it is still holding what it was given to hold.

Two verses earlier he says why. The treasure is in earthen vessels, so that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us. The clay is not the point. The clay was never the point. Nobody in that passage is being graded on how well the pot performed under load.

You are still carrying every bit of what you were carrying at ten to eleven, and nothing at that printer took any of it out of you. 2 Corinthians 4:7 puts the treasure inside ordinary clay in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping it lit in there, which is exactly why a two second laugh cannot reach it.

And I want to say one plain thing before I go on, because a room can change character and the change is not always visible from inside it. If what is happening at that desk has stopped being jokes in general and started being something aimed at you, or if it has become anything you would not want described out loud, please tell somebody who can actually help you, today. Enduring is not the holy option when you are being harmed, and reporting it would not put you out.

What a laugh is, and what it is not

Nine years is a long time to run a private trial with no defense counsel, so let me say what the prosecution has never had to prove.

A laugh at eleven o'clock is a survival move made by a body that has correctly read a room. That is all it is. It is the same equipment that makes you smile at a border agent and go quiet when a car pulls alongside. It has kept people alive. It is not a doctrinal statement, it is not a denial, and it is not on any list anywhere of things that put a light out.

You have carried the same light through nine years of eleven o'clocks, and not one of them left a mark on it. John 10:28 is written down without a footnote, no one plucks them out of His hand, and the Spirit who sealed you is not sitting in the parking lot revising that because of a mug and a half second.

Notice what I am not doing. I am not telling you to speak up tomorrow. I am not handing you a line to have ready, or a way to change the subject, or a plan for what to do when Craig starts. There is no technique in this message and there is not going to be one, because the moment I hand you a move, I have handed you a way to fail on Thursday, and you already have one of those.

You were lit by Christ and you are lit at this minute, in that building, at that desk, on the third floor. Ephesians 5:8 says light in the Lord, and it locates the light in Him and not in your performance at a printer, and the same Spirit who wrote that line through Paul is holding it steady over you while you read this.

The breakthrough

So here is what is on the table this morning, and there is nothing in it for you to go and do.

You are not put out, and you never were, and the room does not have the switch. 2 Corinthians 4:9 says cast down but not destroyed, written by a man who knew what an actual hostile room costs, and His Spirit is the one carrying the flame rather than your composure at a kettle.

Which means the drive home can stop being a hearing. The name you hand yourself at the second exit is not a finding of fact. It is a habit, and it has been running unopposed for nine years because nobody ever stood up for the defendant, and I am standing up now: there is no charge, there is no case, and the file is empty. It is already settled, and it was settled long before Craig learned that impression. Romans 8:33 asks who is going to lay anything to your charge, and the Holy Spirit answers that question the same way today, on the parkway, at half past five.

And the tea beside Priya's keyboard was not a consolation prize for the thing you did not say. It was the treasure in the clay, doing what treasure does, on a Tuesday, with nobody watching.

Declare this over yourself

You are not manufacturing anything here. Christ is in you, and the lines below are agreement with what is already written rather than a request for something new. What comes of it on that floor, in that team, in that building is His to decide, and He answers as He sees fit and in His timing. Say it out loud anyway, in the car if the car is the only private room you have, and let the Holy Spirit seat it.

  1. Eleven o'clock at that desk, you are not my measure. I have laughed on cue in your room and 2 Corinthians 4:8 says pressed is not the same word as crushed, so you keep the joke and I will keep the light I did not light.
  2. Name I call myself on the drive home, get out. You have been running a trial with no defense for nine years, and in the name of Jesus you have no right to stay in a woman Christ has already lit.
  3. Jesus, You are the treasure and the clay is only clay, so I am not on trial between the second exit and my own front door. I receive what is written over an ordinary vessel, and I am driving home tonight with my jaw loose and the file closed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
