Someone Was WarmedIsaiah 55:11

Nine Years Outside A Door

This message is for a father who has prayed the same prayer outside a son's door for nine years and heard nothing back

The rug in that hallway is worn through in one place, about the size of two shoes, and it is worn there because a man has stood in that exact spot most nights for nine years.

Ray puts his hand on the door frame and not on the door. That is a rule he made early on without ever saying it out loud. The handle rattles, and a rattle sounds like somebody trying to come in, and he is not trying to come in.

He waits until the strip of light under the door has been steady for a while, which usually means headphones, which usually means his son is awake and not doing anything he would need to hide.

Then he says the same words he has said since Danny was eighteen.

"The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace."

Then, "Goodnight, son."

Then he goes to bed.

Danny is twenty seven now. He works at a place that does fleet tires and he is good at it, and he pays for his own phone, and he takes his plate to the sink. It is not a war. That is the thing people get wrong when they hear a summary of it. There is no shouting in this house and there has not been for a long time. It is more like weather that settled in and did not move on.

They talk about the truck. They talk about whether the game is on. Somewhere around the fall of the second year the conversations stopped going any deeper than that, and Ray has never worked out which one was the last one.

Nine years is roughly three thousand two hundred nights.

He has never once heard anything back through that door. Not a goodnight. Not a shut up, Dad. Not a movement of the bed. He listens for it every single time and he has stopped admitting to himself that he listens.

His wife asked him a few years ago whether he was going to keep doing it.

He said he did not know how to stop.

Some nights it feels like the words go about eighteen inches and drop onto the rug. He can almost see them lying there in the dark, on the worn patch, in a heap, nine years of them.

Tonight the strip of light goes off while he is still standing there.

He says it anyway, quieter.

Then he stands with his hand on the frame for a second longer than usual, and then he goes down the hall to bed.

What the promise is actually fastened to

Isaiah spends the whole of his fifty fifth chapter talking to people who have run out of evidence, and near the end of it he says something about rain.

Rain and snow come down, he says, and they do not go back up. They soak in. They water the ground, and the ground puts up seed for the sower and bread for the person who is going to eat it, and none of that happens on the day it rains and none of it is visible from a window.

And then he says: that is what My word is like.

Look carefully at what the promise is fastened to. It is not fastened to a timetable. It is not fastened to a visible result. It is fastened to the word itself, and to the One who sent it out, and it says that thing does not come back empty.

You are speaking words that are not lying in a heap on that rug. Isaiah 55:11 attaches the guarantee to what God sends out and not to what a man is able to observe from a hallway, and the Spirit is the One who makes a written line like that hold steady in a father at eleven at night.

so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.Isaiah 55:11

And the words he has been saying are not his own words. That blessing is out of the sixth chapter of Numbers, given to Aaron to say over people, and it has been said over frightened and stubborn and ordinary human beings for about three thousand years.

You have been sowing into ground you were never given a window onto. That is the whole picture Isaiah 55 draws, rain going down and bread coming up on a schedule nobody in the story gets to watch, and His Spirit does not ask a man to see the field before He will call the seed real.

Nobody ever sent a receipt to a city

There is a line in Matthew about a city on a hill, and it is usually read as encouragement about being noticeable. Read it as a fact about geography instead.

A city up on a hill is visible from a long way off at night, and it has no idea. Nobody has ever sent word up to a city to say that on a particular Tuesday a man on a road twelve miles out was cold and tired and lost his nerve, and then came around a bend and saw the lights, and kept walking.

The city was not informed. The city was not thanked. The city did not know it had happened, and it happened.

You are a city on a hill, and no city in history has ever been sent a list of who saw it. Matthew 5:14 states that as a plain fact about what a lit thing on high ground is, and what the Spirit adds is that it is about you, in a hallway, with your hand on a door frame.

Now let me refuse something, because it gets handed to fathers like Ray constantly and it is not clean.

I am not going to tell you the silence is God working something in you. Maybe He is. That is His business and He does not brief me on it, and it is a poor reason to hand a man in order to keep him standing on a worn patch of rug. And I am certainly not going to tell you that nine years without an answer means something was missing in how you asked. Nothing was missing. That is not how any of this works, and anybody who has implied otherwise to you was wrong.

You were never owed a report, and not having one is not a verdict on anything about you. Isaiah 55:11 promises the word will not return empty and never once promises the sender a summary, exactly as it is written, and the Holy Spirit is not withholding a receipt to test a man who has stood in the same place three thousand nights.

The breakthrough

So there is nothing here for you to take up.

Read that again, because a turn is expected around now and it is not coming. Nothing in this changes what you do at that door tonight. Say it or do not say it. There is no count, no streak, no better wording, no technique that opens a door in a house you already live in.

And there is no result being promised to you here, because I do not have one to give and I would not hand you an invented one.

You are carried by a promise fastened to His word and not to your evidence. Isaiah 55:11 puts the accomplishing on God's side of the sentence from beginning to end, and the Holy Spirit did not send a word out into a house in order to hold the outcome over the man who spoke it.

And on the nights when the strip of light goes off while you are still standing there, none of this moves. Feeling like the words dropped on the rug and them actually dropping on the rug are two entirely different things, and only one of them is real.

Bless your son. He is loved by God and he is not a project.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud, in the hallway or in the truck at the yard gate, at whatever volume the house allows. The right to speak them is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority underneath the words is His and never your own; the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a person, never the steadiness of the voice. Then leave the outcome to Him, however He answers and in whatever way He chooses.

  1. Door at the end of the hallway, you are not the receipt. Isaiah 55:11 says the word God sends out does not come back to Him empty, and it says nothing anywhere about a man being handed a report on it.
  2. Nine years of nothing back, get out. In the name of Jesus you do not stand on this rug with me one more night, because rain has never once been thanked by the field and the bread still came up.
  3. Lord, You are the One who fastened the promise to Your own word and not to what I can see from a hallway, and I am not going to ask You tonight for a receipt You never offered. I thank You that it has already gone where You sent it, and I am putting my hand on this frame and saying the blessing one more time before I go to bed.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
