Kept Burning1 Kings 19:5

The Monday After

This message is for the Monday after a big weekend when the room was full, and you got home and there was nothing in you at all

The curtains are still shut and it is ten past twelve.

Camille knows it is ten past twelve because the phone told her, face down on the nightstand, buzzing with the second message from her sister Dionne, who is at work and has typed that was SO good yesterday and then, four minutes later, a row of hearts.

It was so good yesterday. That is the part she cannot square.

The hall was full. Actually full, chairs down the sides full, which it has not been since before the roof was fixed. Camille was on the door from half past eight and in the kitchen from ten, and she carried the big urn twice because Brother Marlon's back is bad, and she cut and buttered somewhere in the region of two hundred pieces of bread, and she laughed until her face ached at something one of the teenagers did with a tablecloth.

She meant every minute of it. She was not performing. She went home Sunday night warm all the way through and slept like a dropped coat.

And she woke at half past six on Monday with nothing in her at all.

Not sadness. That is what frightens her. Sadness she could work with, sadness has a shape. This is a flatness, a room with the furniture taken out, and when she tried at about eight o'clock to pray, the words went up about as far as the ceiling and stopped there, and she lay back down and has been lying here since.

She has been through the possibilities. She has wondered whether she did the weekend for the wrong reasons. She has wondered whether it was pride, whether she was showing off with the urn, whether the laughing was too loud. She has gone looking for a sin to pin it on, the way you pat your pockets for keys, and she cannot find one, and not finding one is somehow worse, because then what is this.

Underneath all of it is the sentence she has not said out loud, and it is the reason the curtains are still shut. If the light in me was real, there would be some of it left this morning.

Downstairs a door goes. The blade of sun through the gap in the curtains has moved off the blanket and onto the wall.

What heaven sent to a finished man

Elijah has just had the largest day of his entire working life. Fire, rain, a nation on its face, a run in front of a chariot. And one chapter later he is a day into the wilderness, sitting under a bush, asking God to let him die.

Now watch what heaven does, because it is not what any of us would do.

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.1 Kings 19:5

No rebuke. No diagnosis. No inquiry into whether he had done the fire for the wrong reasons. An angel, a touch, and bread. He eats and sleeps. The angel comes back a second time and feeds him again, and says the journey is too great for him, which is heaven agreeing with him rather than arguing. Two meals and two sleeps before God says one word about what is next.

You are being treated by God exactly the way He treated a prophet flat on the ground, and there is nothing in that scene about failure. 1 Kings 19:5 is written down with the bread in it and no reprimand anywhere near it, and the Spirit who sent that angel is not standing over your bed this morning with a different attitude.

Notice the thing everybody skips. Elijah's emptiness arrives immediately after the best day. Not after a compromise. Not after a season of drifting. After the fire. The book puts the two side by side and offers no explanation and no apology, which tells you that a body emptying out after a full day is not evidence of anything spiritual having gone wrong.

You have not run out of anything that was yours to keep topped up. That is what the written word is showing you in that wilderness, and His Spirit did not come to your house on Sunday as a tank He filled and you have since drained.

The lamp was never the supplier

There is a line about the lampstand in the tabernacle that settles the whole question of where the burning comes from, and it settles it in the least flattering way possible for the lamp.

The command is that pure beaten olive oil be brought in, to cause the lamps to burn continually. Continually is the word. And the lamp has no role whatsoever in the bringing. The lamp does not press olives. The lamp does not go looking for oil on a Monday. The lamp's entire job description is to sit there and hold what is poured into it, and the burning was somebody else's responsibility from the first day.

So when Sunday's warmth is gone by Monday lunchtime, nothing has been proved about you. A lamp with no oil in it at noon is not a defective lamp. It is a lamp, doing the only thing a lamp has ever done, waiting on a supply it was never asked to produce.

You are still His lamp with the curtains shut and your phone face down, and the supply is on Him. Leviticus 24:2 puts the bringing of the oil on the priest in writing, never on the lamp, and the same Spirit who is called the oil of gladness is not rationing you for a slow morning.

And let me take one thing off you before it settles in. I am not going to tell you when this lifts. Not next Sunday, not by the weekend, not once you have had a proper rest. Anybody who hands you a date is handing you a new way to fail on Thursday, and I would rather leave you with the truth, which is that God is not slow, that the timing is His, and that nothing about His care for you is running late.

You were lit by Christ, and a flat Monday has no authority over a thing Christ did. John 8:12 names Him as the light of the world in the plainest terms, and His Spirit is the one holding it in you, which is precisely why an empty morning cannot vote on it.

Rest is not a dimming. It is not a lapse, it is not the light going down, it is not something to get through so that the real life can resume. Heaven's first move on Elijah's worst day was to put him to sleep, and heaven has not changed its methods.

The breakthrough

So here is what stands, at ten past twelve, in a dark room, and you do not have to do a single thing with any of it.

You are lit, and you are empty, and those two things have never once contradicted each other. 2 Corinthians 4:7 says the treasure sits in a clay pot precisely so the power reads as God's rather than the pot's, that is written down, and His Spirit is the one carrying the flame while the pot lies flat.

Which means the sentence under the closed curtains is not true. If the light in you were real there would be some of it left this morning is an argument that would have condemned Elijah under his bush, and heaven's answer to Elijah was bread. It is already settled, and it was settled before the hall filled up and before it emptied. Ephesians 5:8 says you are light in the Lord, lit in the past tense and standing in the present, and the Holy Spirit is agreeing with that over a folded blanket right now.

And the two hundred pieces of bread and butter were not the light either. They were what the light did on a Sunday, in a kitchen, with a bad back on the urn. The light was there before the urn and it is here in the dark and the crowd never had anything to do with it.

Declare this over yourself

You are not generating anything here, and you could not this morning anyway. Christ is in you, and the lines below are agreement with what is already written rather than a request for something new. When and how the feeling comes back is His to decide, and He answers as He sees fit and in His timing. Say it out loud anyway, quietly, and let the Holy Spirit seat it in a tired body.

  1. Monday with the curtains shut, you are not a verdict. I came home empty from a good weekend and 1 Kings 19:5 says the first thing heaven sent a finished man was bread, so you keep the dark and I will keep the light I did not light.
  2. Fear that the light went out with the crowd, get out. You have been arguing at my ceiling since eight o'clock, and in the name of Jesus you have no right to stay in a woman Christ has already lit.
  3. Shepherd, You are the One who feeds a man before You brief him, so I am not hunting for a sin to explain my Monday. I receive what is written over an empty lamp, and I am lying here lit, with the curtains however I need them.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
