Three Names In The Car

Ray got as far as the light at Route 9 and Baker before he noticed he had been rehearsing a sentence for eleven blocks.

It was a good sentence. That was the trouble with it. He had built it carefully, the way he builds an estimate for a customer, and it was designed to arrive in Ted's driveway sometime next Saturday while they were both out with their mowers, and it was designed to sound like it had just occurred to him.

The bulletin was on the passenger seat with the pen still lying across it. Three names in his own handwriting, down the white margin next to the announcements. Ted. Marisol from the shop. His brother Dale.

The pastor had not been unkind about it. He never is. He is a decent man who had been up since five and who plainly meant every word, and what he had said was write down three, and pray for them all week, and watch for what God does. The room had liked it. There had been that warm sound a room makes when it agrees. Ray had written the three names in eight seconds because he has been in that room a long time and he knows which three names he is supposed to write.

The light turned green.

"Dad. Are we getting lunch or are we going home first."

"Home first, bud."

His son went back to the window. Ray drove. The fields on the left had gone gold at the edges the way they do in September, and he did not see any of it, because he was on the fourth revision of the sentence for Ted, and had started a second sentence for Marisol, who would be harder, because Marisol is funny and quick and would see it coming from across the shop.

He pulled into the driveway and did the thing he always does, which is to fold the bulletin in half and open the glove box and put it on top of the insurance card.

And then he stopped, with his hand still in there, because the glove box was full.

He counted them. Five bulletins. Five Sundays with three names down the margin. Fifteen names, and some of them repeated, which made it worse and not better, because the repeats were the ones he had not gotten to, and there is a word for a name you write down five times and never reach.

He sat there with the engine ticking and his son already halfway up the walk, and the thought that arrived was not a holy one and he knew it. The thought was: I do not want to see any of these people. Not Ted, who is fine. Not Marisol, who is funny. Not his own brother.

He shut the glove box. He went inside and made grilled cheese and the afternoon went on. But something had gotten loose in the car and it was still loose at nine o'clock that night, and it went something like this: somewhere along the way, the people in his life had turned into a workload, and he could not remember agreeing to that.

The yoke He hands out actually fits

I want to start where Jesus started, because He does hand out a yoke. He says so plainly. He is not shy about it and neither am I.

But read what He says about it, and read what He says about Himself in the same breath, because the two go together and the second one is the part that gets left in the parking lot.

Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.Matthew 11:29

Meek and lowly. That is not a description of the yoke, it is a description of the One at the other end of it, and a yoke is a two person implement. He is telling you what it is like to be harnessed next to Him. He sets the pace. He carries the weight on the side you cannot see. And then in the very next verse He gives the specification: my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

So here is a simple test, and it is His test and not mine. If what you are carrying is grinding you down, it did not come off His shoulder.

You are already wearing the only yoke Jesus ever issued, and it is the one that fits. Matthew 11:30 is the written specification and it has never been amended, and the Holy Spirit is not a foreman standing over that verse. He is the One who walks it into a man's shoulders while he is sitting in a driveway with the engine ticking.

Now, nobody in that sanctuary meant harm. That matters and I am not going to pretend otherwise. The pastor loves those people. The room that made the warm agreeing sound is full of people who would show up with a truck if Ray's basement flooded. The load did not come from malice. It came from a good instinct, sincerely held, that turned into arithmetic somewhere between the pulpit and the pen.

But an accidental load still weighs what it weighs. And the tell is right there in the glove box: fifteen names, and by the fifth Sunday not one of them felt like a person anymore.

You have rest available to you at a red light on Route 9, and it is not the prize for finishing the list. That is written into Hebrews 4:9, where there remains a rest for the people of God, present tense, still standing. The Spirit does not argue anybody into rest. He seats them in it.

Nobody was ever assigned to you as a project

Here is what a checklist does to a human being, and it does it without asking permission.

The moment Ted's name went down the margin, Ted stopped being the man with the mower who lends Ray his edger every May, and became a task with a status. Not done. Overdue. And the strange, awful mechanism of that is that Ray now avoids the very driveway he used to stand in for forty minutes talking about nothing, because a driveway with an assignment attached to it is not a place you go for nothing anymore.

That is the cost, and it lands on both ends. The person becomes a project. And the one holding the list becomes somebody who cannot be anywhere without an agenda in his pocket.

You were never handed a quota by the One who said His burden is light. Galatians 5:1 wrote the liberty down before anybody had a bulletin to fold, and what the Spirit adds is that the liberty is not theoretical and not for other people. It is for the man in the driver's seat.

And I am not about to hand you a smaller list. That is the move I refuse to make. There is a version of this message that takes the fifteen names away and replaces them with three, or with one, or with be intentional, and every one of those is the same weight in a lighter box. There is no reduced target here. There is no target here.

What there is, is a fact about you that was true in that car before the bulletin was printed.

This is yours, and it is a yoke you can wear all day without it taking anything out of you. Colossians 2:10 has it in print, complete in Him, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is the reason it lands on a specific man at a specific stoplight instead of staying in a commentary.
