The Stockroom And The Joke

This message is for working a stockroom where the manager makes the same joke about what you believe every morning, and having nowhere else to go with a family to keep

It happens at two minutes past seven, and it has happened at two minutes past seven for four years.

Wesley Grant comes through the roller door of the stockroom at the building supply on the Bexley industrial park, hangs his coat on the third hook because the first two are broken, and clips his scanner onto his belt. The strip lights are already on. They are always already on. Somewhere behind the racking the compressor kicks in and settles.

Then Dale comes past the end of aisle four with a clipboard and says it.

Morning, Reverend.

That is all it is. Two words. Dale says it the same way every time, with the same little lift on the second one, and whoever is nearby gives the same half laugh they have given for four years, which is not really a laugh anymore, more a sound people make so the moment can be over. Then Dale carries on to the office and Wesley starts the pallet count.

It is not cruelty. That is the part that is hard to say out loud without it sounding like a complaint. Dale is not a bad man. He gave Wesley three days off with pay when Wesley's father was in the hospital and never put it through the system. He remembers both his kids' names. He is not sharpening anything. He just found something four years ago that got a laugh once, and he has never stopped, because that is what people do with a thing that got a laugh once.

And Wesley cannot leave.

That is the whole arithmetic and it takes about six seconds to do. There is the mortgage. There is Nadia's hours getting cut in June. There is the health plan, which covers Aria's inhalers, and there is the fact that the last time he seriously looked, everything within an hour's drive paid less. He is thirty nine. He has a family to keep. He is not going anywhere, and he has stopped pretending to himself that he might.

So he does the count. Eleven hundred lengths of decking board, two of them cracked. He logs the cracked ones. He restacks the run at the back where somebody left it leaning. At half past nine he makes coffee for Priya on the forklift because she cannot leave the machine, and at eleven he holds the far end of a sheet of drywall for a delivery driver who did not ask.

Nobody in this building has heard him say anything about God in four years, except that everybody knows, which is why the joke works. He is not hiding. He has just never found a version of speaking that would not sound like defending himself.

At half past four he clocks out and drives home past the shopping center, and somewhere between the second light and the school he does the thought he does most days. If a light is what he is supposed to be, then a light is clearly a thing that survives being looked at. And this is a thing that has been laughed at, gently, at two minutes past seven, one thousand times.

He has decided what that means. He decided it a long time ago and he does not revisit it. It means whatever the sentence is about, it is about somebody in a different building.

In the house of his master the Egyptian

There is one line in Genesis that gets read past because the story around it is so loud.

Joseph is in Egypt. He did not choose Egypt. He was pulled out of a pit by his own brothers, sold to traders, and resold in a market to an officer of Pharaoh, and by any reasonable measure that is the end of the story of a favored son. And then the text says something so plain it is easy to skim.

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.Genesis 39:2

Read the last clause again and notice the address. Not with Joseph on the way out of the house. Not with Joseph once the situation improved. In the house of his master the Egyptian, which is to say in the exact building he had no way of leaving, doing work he did not pick, under a man whose household ran on gods that were not his.

You are not somewhere God declined to come. Genesis 39:2 puts the Lord in Potiphar's house with a slave, and the written line does not treat the address as a problem to be solved first. The Spirit is what takes an ancient sentence like that and makes it smell like cardboard and cold concrete at two minutes past seven.

And notice what Joseph does not do. He does not confront Potiphar. He does not organize the household. He does not deliver a speech in the courtyard. Genesis gives him no dialogue at all in that stretch. He works, and what the text keeps repeating is not what Joseph achieved but who was with him.

You have the same company Joseph had, and it is not conditional on your finding a way to say something. That is written into a chapter that records no sermon from him whatsoever, and the Spirit does not stand at the roller door waiting for a better version of you to arrive before He comes in.

A joke has never yet put a lamp out

Consider what would actually have to be true for the joke to be doing what Wesley thinks it is doing.

A lamp goes out when the fuel stops or the wick is cut or somebody covers it. Those are the only ways. Being looked at is not on the list. Being laughed at, gently, by a man with a clipboard who is not even really thinking about it, is not on the list either. If the light in a person could be extinguished by mild social friction at seven in the morning, it would be a poor sort of light and Jesus would not have compared it to a city that cannot be hidden.

And one plain word before we go on, because this matters more than the rest of it. If what is happening where you work or where you live has stopped being awkwardness and started being danger, please tell somebody today who can actually help you. Staying is not the holy option when you are not safe, and leaving would not put you out.

You are still lit, and four years of the same two words have not reached the wick. Matthew 5:14 compares it to a city on a hill precisely because a city is not the sort of thing that can be discreetly turned down, and the Spirit is the one carrying that comparison into a building with a pallet count in it.

Now look again at what Wesley actually did between seven and half past four. He made coffee for a woman who could not leave a machine. He held the far end of a board for somebody who did not ask. He logged two cracked lengths of decking that nobody would have checked. None of that was strategy. He was not running a plan. It is simply what a lit man does in an aisle.

You were being that all day, on the day you were most sure you were nothing. Ephesians 2:10 has the works prepared beforehand rather than invented by you under pressure, and what the Spirit adds is not a target. What the Spirit adds is that the walking around in them has been happening already.

The breakthrough

So the arithmetic can be put down now, not because the job improved, but because it was measuring the wrong thing.

You have this now, and it is already settled. Genesis 39:2 says the Lord was with him in the house of his master the Egyptian, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a change of address before He agrees with it. He has been in aisle four since the compressor first kicked in.

You do not owe Dale a speech. You are not his opponent, and nothing here asks you to become one. He is a man who found something that got a laugh and never noticed what it cost, and he can be blessed and left in God's hands exactly as he is.

You are the light of the world under strip lights at two minutes past seven, and that sentence has no clause in it about the building being friendly. It is written in Matthew 5:14 with no environmental conditions attached, and what His Spirit adds is not new information. What His Spirit adds is that it is about you, on the Bexley industrial park, in the boots you already own.

Tomorrow Dale will probably say it again. The compressor will settle. The strip lights will already be on. Nothing in the building changes, and none of it was ever the thing that was in question.

Declare this over yourself

You are not working anything up here. The ground under these words is not your composure at seven in the morning, it is Christ in you, and a standing that was given to you long before this job existed. Say them in the truck, or in the hall, wherever nobody has to hear. What God does with that building, and with Dale, and with the year ahead, is His to decide, and you are carrying none of it.

  1. Stockroom under the strip lights, you are not a place God stayed out of. Genesis 39:2 says the Lord was with Joseph in the house of his master, and He is with me between the racking at seven in the morning.
  2. Joke I have heard four years, get out in the name of Jesus. The idea that a man laughed at is a man put out has no right to stay, and Christ is the one who lit me and nobody in that building can reach the switch.
  3. Lord, You were with Joseph in the house of his master, and Your word says it in Genesis 39:2 without one complaint about the address. I am clocking in tomorrow at seven with nothing to prove and nothing to defend.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
