Never Put OutPsalm 112:4

Which Rooms Are Safe

This message is for a marriage where faith is the one subject that ends the evening, and eleven years of quietly learning which rooms are safe

Ten forty, and the lamp on the end table is the only one on downstairs.

Joanne comes in from the kitchen with two mugs, and Ellis moves his feet off the cushion without looking up, which is how he says thank you, and has been for as long as she can remember.

She sits. They watch the end of something neither of them chose. Outside, a car goes by slow because of the speed bump, and the light off the streetlamp comes through the blinds in strips across the carpet.

Here is what eleven years have taught her, and she could not tell you the day she learned any of it.

The kitchen is safe. Anything at all can be said standing at that counter, at any hour, about anything, and it will be fine.

The car is safe if the drive is under twenty minutes. Over twenty minutes it stops being safe, and she does not know why that is, but she has tested it enough times to trust it.

Sunday morning between eight and nine is not safe. The living room after ten is not safe. Anywhere within about two sentences of his mother's name is not safe.

There was one conversation, at a wedding reception a long time ago, that went badly enough that neither of them has referred to it since. Not once, not in eleven years. The whole map dates from that night, and she drew it alone, and nobody has ever seen it.

She keeps a small paperback in the kitchen drawer with the takeout menus. It is not hidden. It is just in there, spine up, and she reads a page of it standing at the counter while the kettle comes to the boil, and that is the arrangement.

Ellis is not a cruel man. She wants that understood. He fills her car when it gets low and never mentions it. When her mother was ill he drove her to every single appointment for nine months and sat in the waiting room with his crossword and never once sighed about it.

He is kind, and he will not have this one subject in his house, and both of those things are true at the same time, and she has stopped expecting anybody to understand how that works.

Tonight, at about ten fifty, there is a moment where she almost says something. It is not even a big thing. It is a small thing about her day, and there is a word in it that would open a door.

She does not say it. And the not saying is so worn in by now that it does not feel like a decision. It feels like stepping around a chair in the dark in a room you have lived in for years.

At eleven she rinses the mugs and goes up. On the landing there is a window over the stairs, and the streetlight comes through it and lies across the top three steps.

She stops there a second with her hand on the rail.

"I don't even know if I'm still lit," she says, to nobody, very quietly, and then goes on up.

Where the light comes up

There is a line in the Psalms that does not do what people expect it to do.

Almost every promise about light that gets read out loud in a church is heard as a promise that the darkness is going to be removed. The room will change. The subject will open. The evening will stop ending.

This one says something different, and it is worth reading slowly.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for those who are gracious and compassionate and righteous.Psalm 112:4

Even in darkness. Not after it. Not once it lifts. The Hebrew word under dawns is the word for sunrise, the ordinary one, the thing that happens to a field at five in the morning whether the field has any opinion about it or not. And the psalm puts that sunrise inside the dark, not on the far side of it.

Now, the word upright is where a reader like you gets tripped, so let me take it head on. It sounds like a bar. It sounds like a description of somebody who has been handling the eleven years better than you have, more patiently, with a better attitude at ten forty at night.

It is not a bar. In the Psalms, upright is a word for who a person belongs to, and Scripture settles that question elsewhere and settles it entirely: in Christ, a person is made the righteousness of God, which is a status conferred and never a grade earned.

You are one of the upright that psalm is talking about, and that is a description of whose you are, not a standard you are being measured against. Psalm 112:4 says it, the written word says elsewhere that in Christ we are made the righteousness of God, and the Holy Spirit is not auditing how your evening went before He will let that stand over you.

Which means the whole sentence is available to a woman on a landing at eleven at night.

You have light rising in that living room at ten forty, and it is rising inside the dark rather than waiting for the dark to clear. That is precisely what Psalm 112:4 puts in writing, a dawn happening in a darkness rather than after one, and the Spirit is what makes a written dawn a fact about a real house at a real hour on a real Tuesday.

The map in your head is not a failure

I want to say something about those eleven years of learning the rooms, because I think you have been quietly filing it under cowardice.

It is not cowardice. It is knowing your own house.

Scripture is full of people who understood exactly what could be said in a given room and what could not. Jesus answered Pilate and said nothing at all to Herod, in the same night, on purpose. There is a whole book of Proverbs about the difference between a word in season and a word out of it. Nowhere does the Bible treat the reading of a room as a moral failing, and nowhere does it hand out points for saying a true thing at the worst possible moment.

You have done nothing wrong by learning your house, and that map is discernment rather than cowardice. Scripture keeps company with people who knew when a thing could be spoken and when it could not, and the same Spirit who gave them that sense is the Spirit in you, giving you yours.

And I want to say one plain thing here, gently, once, and then move on. If what is happening in that house has stopped being coldness and started being danger, please tell somebody today who can actually help you. Staying is not the holy option when you are not safe, and walking out of a dangerous house would not put you out.

For the far more common thing, the cold subject and the closed door and the careful evenings, here is what I am not going to do. I am not going to hand you a way to bring it up. I am not going to suggest a moment, a phrasing, a book to leave on a table, or a version of Tuesday where you finally say the thing. That is not what this is, and you have had enough of that from people who meant well.

What I am telling you instead is what a room can and cannot do.

A room can be cold. A room can be closed. A room can go eleven years without one particular subject being said out loud in it. What a room has never once been able to do is reach into a lamp and take the light out of it. There is no switch in that living room wired to you. There is no dimmer on the wall by the door with your name under it.

You are lit in a room that has no switch for you, and eleven careful years have not touched the supply for one evening. Psalm 112:4 puts the arising outside the person and outside the room both, and the Spirit is not taking the temperature of a living room at ten forty before He decides whether to hold you there.

The breakthrough

So nothing here is asking you to do anything about Ellis.

Not tonight, not on Sunday, not slowly over the next few months. This is not a message about your husband, and it does not contain a plan for him, and it is not going to end by handing you responsibility for a darkness you did not make and cannot switch off.

You have no assignment out of this at all, and the only thing being handed over is a fact that was already true on the landing before you read a word. The word said it first, in a psalm about a dawn happening inside a dark, and what the Spirit adds tonight is that the psalm is about your house and not about somebody with an easier one.

And the sentence you said on the stairs, the one you said to nobody, is not a diagnosis. It is a tired woman at eleven at night describing a room she has been standing in for a long time, and describing a room accurately is not the same as describing yourself.

You were never put out, and eleven years of quiet is not a record of a light going down. That is what Psalm 112:4 means by a dawn in the dark, and the Spirit is agreeing with it right now, on the third step from the top, with the streetlight coming through.

Declare this over yourself

Say them where it is safe to say them, at whatever volume that room allows. The right to speak this way is not nerve and it is not technique. It is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority under these words is His and not your own; the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a house. So say them plainly, and leave the outcome to Him.

  1. Living room at ten forty at night, you have no switch for me. You are a room and you have never had wiring to a lamp God lit, and Psalm 112:4 says light dawns in the darkness and not after it. Eleven years of you, and the supply has not dropped once.
  2. Question of whether I am still lit, get out. In the name of Jesus you do not get the third step from the top, because the written word puts the arising outside me and outside this house both. I am the flame in the basement, and I have been burning the whole winter.
  3. Lord, You make a dawn happen inside a dark instead of waiting for one, and You call me upright because of Christ and not because of how I handled the evening. I thank You that no room here was ever wired to me. I bless this house tonight, and I am going up those stairs lit.
