Light Already GivenEphesians 5:8

Ten To Six In The Dark

This message is for pulling up the shop shutters at ten to six in the dark, thinking that whatever a light is meant to be, it is not a man who has done the same forty minutes for nineteen years

Ten to six on Dover Street, and the dark still has the whole block to itself.

Sami Haddad comes up the sidewalk with the keys already out, because after nineteen years his hand knows the walk from the corner to the door and counts the steps without him. The shutter is cold. It is always cold in February. He bends, hooks the bar, and hauls, and the shutter goes up with that long rattling groan that is the loudest sound Dover Street will hear until the first bus.

Then the lights. Back row first, because the back row warms slowest. Then the middle. Then the front, and the whole doorway throws itself out onto the wet sidewalk in one yellow rectangle, and for about four seconds the street is not dark anymore in the place where Sami is standing.

He does not look at it. He has never once looked at it. He is thinking about the bread order.

Forty minutes. That is the shape of it. Fill the coffee machine, cut the bands off the newspapers, set out the rolls, wipe a counter that is already clean, turn the sign, prop the door. Somewhere in the middle of it Renee comes past. Renee is a night nurse at St. Anne's and she has been getting off shift at ten past six for six of Sami's nineteen years. She takes a coffee, two sugars, and a plain roll, and she says almost nothing, because at ten past six after twelve hours there is almost nothing left to say. Sami has her coffee poured before the bell finishes ringing. Some mornings he puts a second roll in the bag and does not mention it.

Then she goes, and the bus comes, and the day starts, and it is a day like the day before it.

Sami has been in church since he was small. He knows the sentence. He has heard it read from the front more times than he could count, the whole business about a city on a hill and a candle under a bowl, and every time he hears it he does the same quiet arithmetic in the back of his head. A light is a person who goes somewhere. A light is a person with a story people lean forward for. A light is the man who stood up at the front last spring and told the room what happened to him in the hospital and had half of them in tears.

A light, whatever else it is, is not a man of fifty three who has done the same forty minutes in the dark for nineteen years and will do them again tomorrow.

He turned the key this morning at ten to six. He will turn it tomorrow at ten to six. And when the rectangle of yellow fell out onto the wet sidewalk, and Renee saw it from four hundred yards up the street and knew she was nearly home, Sami was in the back checking the bread order and did not see her at all.

The word came before the work

Here is the thing about the sentence Sami has been doing arithmetic on. When it was spoken, it was not spoken over graduates.

Jesus was on a hillside in front of fishermen with salt still in their sleeves, farmers, a tax man, women who had walked in from villages nobody has heard of since. Not one of them had done a single thing yet. There was no ministry, no story, no hospital account, no front of any room. He looked at that crowd of complete nobodies and did not say become. He said are.

You are the light of the world, and you were that at ten to six this morning while your hand was still cold on the shutter. I am not saying it to cheer you up. It is written down in Matthew 5:14, said over people who had accomplished nothing at all, and the Holy Spirit is not embarrassed by how ordinary the room is that He says it into. He takes a written line like that and seats it inside a man who is thinking about a bread order.

Paul says the same thing to a city full of ordinary workers, and he says it with the tenses turned all the way up.

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:Ephesians 5:8

Read that twice and watch where the verbs sit. Were. Are. Both of them finished. Not you are becoming, not you are working toward, not you are almost. The change of state happened on His side of the counter, and it happened in the Lord, which is the only place light of this kind has ever come from.

You were darkness once and you are light in the Lord now, and neither half of that sentence is waiting on your performance. Ephesians 5:8 puts one verb in the past and one in the present and leaves the future entirely alone. The Spirit is not standing over your shoulder waiting for a result before He will agree with it. He agrees with it now, at the hour you are reading this, in the room you are reading it in.

A lamp is never asked how it is doing

Nobody in the history of lamps has ever walked into a room, looked at the lamp, and asked it whether it felt like it was shining.

That question does not belong to lamps. It belongs to people who have confused being a light with performing as one. And it is a cruel question, because the honest answer at ten to six in February is always no. Nobody feels luminous while hauling a cold shutter. The feeling was never the evidence.

You have a light that does not depend on your noticing it. Jesus put it in the most unarguable place He could find, on a stand, in a house, giving light to everybody in it, and Matthew 5:15 does not add one clause about the lamp's opinion of itself. The Spirit is what carries a written line like that off the page and sets it down in a stockroom, a back kitchen, a doorway on Dover Street at ten to six.

And notice what the source is, because this is where the whole thing turns. The candle is not the fire. The doorway is not the electricity. Sami's yellow rectangle on the wet sidewalk is not a thing Sami manufactures out of his own personality at four in the morning. It is a thing that happens because something else is switched on and he is where it is.

You are lit, and the One who lit you has a name. Jesus said it about Himself first in John 8:12, and only afterward did He turn to a hillside of nobodies and say the same word over them. That order is written into the text and it never reverses. What His Spirit does is stop that from being a doctrine you agree with and make it a description of the person tying an apron on right now.

So the arithmetic Sami has been doing was wrong from the first line. He was not adding up whether he had produced enough light. There was nothing to add up. The current was never his to generate, and it has been running through that doorway every morning for nineteen years while he was counting rolls.

The breakthrough

So there is nothing here to start. That is not a soft way of saying try later. It means the thing you have been waiting to become has been the case since the day you were put in Christ, and no morning since has undone it.

You have this now, and it is already settled. Ephesians 5:8 does not put it in front of you as a target, it puts it behind you as a fact, and the Holy Spirit is not in the business of dangling. He is in the business of seating. What He seats does not need topping up, defending, or proving by a story somebody stands up and tells.

You are the light of the world in a doorway on an ordinary street, and that sentence has no clause in it about how interesting your life is. It is written in Matthew 5:14 with no qualifiers attached, and what the Spirit adds is not new information. What the Spirit adds is that it is about you, at your address, in the shoes you have on.

The shutter still goes up at ten to six. February is still cold. The bread order still has to be checked. None of that changes and none of it was ever the problem. What changes is that the man doing it has stopped waiting for permission to be what he already is.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into anything here. What you are about to say out loud is already yours: the light is in Christ, and Christ is in you, and that standing was given to you before you had an opinion about it. Say it at your own volume, in your own kitchen. What God does with it, and when, and on whose street, is His to decide, and you can leave that with Him gladly.

  1. Ten to six in the dark, you are not the one who decides what I am. The shutter goes up on a street that God already calls lit, and Ephesians 5:8 says I am light in the Lord standing right here in this doorway.
  2. Arithmetic I do on myself, get out in the name of Jesus. The verdict that a light is somebody with a story and never a man with a shutter has no right to stay, and I am lit by Christ and I always was.
  3. Father, You lit me in Christ before I had done anything worth reporting, and Your word settles it in Ephesians 5:8. I am opening up tomorrow at ten to six as a lit man, and I am letting the light fall across my shoes before I go back to the bread order.
