What You Were Before She Asked

The homework page had a curl in the corner from riding around in the bottom of a backpack all day, and Rosie had her elbow on it to hold it flat. Wednesday. The oven fan was still going from the potatoes. Dana was wiping the same six inches of counter she had already wiped once, in the slow way a person wipes a counter when the day is over and there is nothing left in her for whatever comes after it.

"Mom. It's due tomorrow."

"I know, baby. Read me the questions."

"Question one. What is this person's job." Rosie read it flat, the way nine year olds read anything official. "Question two. What did this person want to be when they were my age. Question three. What is the hardest thing this person has ever done."

Dana answered them without turning around. Receptionist at the dental office over on Vine, three days a week. A veterinarian, because of a dog named Buster who deserved better than he got. Sitting up four nights with Rosie's brother the winter he had pneumonia.

"Question four." Rosie tapped the pencil twice on the table. "What is this person actually good at."

And the kitchen went quiet in a way it had not been quiet all evening.

Dana kept her eyes on the counter. She found herself looking at the front of the refrigerator without meaning to. The magnets. The field trip slip nobody had signed. The appointment card from the office she works at. Twelve years in this kitchen. Lunches, laundry, the ride to practice, the ride home, the flu that went around twice, the phone calls she made for her mother. And not one thing she could put in the space after question four. Not a language. Not an instrument. Not a certificate on any wall in this house.

"Organized," she said finally. "Put down organized."

Rosie did not write it.

"Rosie. Put down organized."

"I already did question four."

Dana turned around. Her daughter had her whole small palm flat over the bottom of the page, pencil still in her fingers, doing the thing she does when she has decided something and knows an adult is about to argue with her about it, which is to look you straight in the face and say nothing at all.

"When did you do question four?"

"On the bus."

"You did it before you even asked me?"

"I didn't need to ask you," Rosie said. "I just have to ask you so the paper gets filled in the right way."

Dana set the cloth down. She wanted to see it. She also, in a way she could not have explained to anybody standing in that kitchen, did not want to see it, because whatever was underneath that hand had been written by somebody who had been watching her for nine years, and Dana had spent most of those nine years assuming that nobody was.

"Can I see it?"

"Tomorrow," Rosie said, and slid the page into her folder. "After I hand it in."

He said it out loud before anyone had done a thing about it

The most important sentence ever spoken about ordinary people was spoken to a crowd that had not accomplished anything yet.

Read the front of Matthew 5 slowly and notice who is sitting on that hillside. Fishermen who smelled like fishermen. Farm laborers. Somebody's mother in law. People who had walked out from villages nobody has heard of since, carrying nothing, qualified for nothing, with no track record of any kind behind them. Jesus opens His mouth and He does not say you could become. He does not say here is the program. He tells them what they already are, in the plainest present tense the language has.

You are the light of the world, and you were that on an ordinary Wednesday before anybody thought to ask you what you were good at. That is not a compliment I am paying you. It is Matthew 5:14, written down and left standing for two thousand years, and what the Holy Spirit adds to a line like that is not volume. He adds your name to it.

Notice what He does not do next. He does not hand out a target. He does not set a number. He does not say now go and be that, or be it harder, or be it where more people can see. He states a fact, and then He talks about a lamp and a bowl, which is to say He talks about what would be strange rather than about what is required. The strange thing would be hiding a lit lamp. Nobody ever had to teach a lamp to burn.

You have light in you tonight that no one in your house had to notice for it to be there. John 8:12 says where it comes from, and it does not come from you, which is exactly why a blank space after question four cannot touch it. The Spirit does not argue a person into that. He seats it, quietly, at a counter, on a weeknight.

Question four was already filled in

Here is what I love about a nine year old with a pencil. She did not run an assessment. She did not weigh her mother's gifting against anybody else's mother. She sat on a school bus with a curled piece of paper on her knees and wrote down what she had already seen, and she had already seen it because she has been living inside it for nine years without once calling it anything.

That is nearly always how it goes. The people warmed by a life almost never use the vocabulary that the person themselves would use. They do not say gifted. They do not say impact. They say things like my mom always. They say things like our kitchen. They name a room, or a smell, or the plain fact that somebody was there when they got home. If you asked them to justify it they could not, any more than you can justify why a warm room is better than a cold one.

You were light in that kitchen for twelve years before a worksheet ever came home asking about it. Scripture put that beyond argument in 2 Corinthians 4:6, where God is the one who commanded light to shine out of darkness and then shined in hearts. What the Spirit adds is that the sentence is about a specific person standing on a specific piece of vinyl flooring, and that person is you.

And notice that not being able to name it is not a failure of yours. It is close to a qualification. The list you could not produce is a list of credentials, and credentials were never the material. The material was always an ordinary weeknight and an ordinary person and the Lord who decided to put His own light inside that arrangement.

This is yours, and it did not arrive because you finally qualified for it. Psalm 18:28 wrote it down first: for thou wilt light my candle. The Spirit is not waiting for you to feel that before He agrees with it. He is agreeing with it right now, over the top of everything you would have said about yourself.
