Someone Was WarmedHebrews 6:10

Never Told What Happened After

This message is for twenty years of sitting with people at the worst hour of their lives and never once being told what happened after

There are two blue chairs at the far end of the third floor corridor, by the window, and Manny has sat in the left hand one about nine hundred times.

He knows where the blankets are kept. He knows the tea is better from the machine on the second floor even though it is further. He knows to pull the chair round to an angle instead of sitting straight opposite, because straight opposite is an interview and an angle is company. He knows the difference between a person who wants to talk and a person who wants somebody in the chair, and he can usually tell inside about ninety seconds.

He has been doing it twenty years. He goes on at eleven and comes off at six, two nights a week, and in that time he has learned about four useful things and one of them is when to say nothing at all.

Fourteen years ago he sat with a young man of about twenty-two whose wife was in the operating room. From one until nearly four. The young man kept saying, "You don't have to stay." Manny kept saying, "I know." That was most of the conversation for three hours, that and the clock at the end of the corridor that clicks, and the floor polisher going somewhere else on the ward, and at one point the young man laughing at something on his phone and then looking absolutely appalled with himself for laughing.

At about four they came and took him through.

Manny went home at six.

He has never found out. Not whether she lived, not whether they are still married, not whether the young man is fifty-something now and telling somebody about a night in a corridor. Nothing. The story simply stops at four in the morning, and it has been stopped there for fourteen years, and he still thinks about it in the car sometimes on the way home.

He keeps a small notebook. First names only, because he could not carry them all otherwise and because anything more felt like taking something that was not his. There are nine hundred and something names in it now, in his handwriting, some of them nearly rubbed away at the front.

Not one of them has an ending.

His daughter asked him once, at a birthday, whether he ever finds out what happens. She was not being unkind. She was genuinely curious, and she is the only person who has ever asked.

He said no, not really, and passed her the potatoes.

Read who is doing the remembering

There is a line in Hebrews written to people who had been at it a long time and were beginning to sag, and it is not shaped the way you would expect a line like that to be shaped.

For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister.Hebrews 6:10

Notice what it does not say. It does not say your work is appreciated. It does not say people will come back and thank you. It does not even lead with a reward.

It makes a claim about God's character. He is not unrighteous. Forgetting what you did would be a moral failure in Him, and it is not in Him to do it, which is a completely different order of assurance than a promise about outcomes. This is not the writer talking a tired person into carrying on. This is the writer telling a tired person what kind of God is holding the other end.

And underneath that claim sits something worth sitting down for. A record is being kept. It exists. It is complete, it is accurate, it has the endings in it, and the only reason you cannot read it is that you were never issued a copy.

You are not the one who keeps the record, and it was never lost just because you do not have it in your hands. Hebrews 6:10 puts the remembering entirely on God and says it would be unrighteousness in Him to do otherwise, and the written word states it as a fact about Him rather than a hope of yours. The Spirit does not talk a man into that in a parking lot at ten past six. He sets it down beside him.

And look at what God calls the thing you did. Work, and labor of love. Not a nice gesture. Not helping out. Labor is a word with weight in it, the word for something that costs, and it is the word He chose for tea from the second floor machine and a chair pulled round to an angle.

You have twenty years of that, and it is God who names it a labor of love rather than you. That is written down in Hebrews 6:10 in exactly those terms, and His Spirit is not adjusting the appraisal downward on the grounds that nobody wrote back.

The not knowing is a feature of the shape

Now let me tell you why the endings never arrive, because I think you may have quietly filed it under something about yourself.

A person at the worst hour of their life is not, at that hour, in a condition to take notes. Shock does something particular to the memory. It records the wrong things. It keeps the pattern on the floor tiles and loses the name of the man who was in the chair. Six months later, that young man could probably tell you the exact sound the clock made and could not tell you one thing about you, including whether you were tall.

That is not ingratitude. That is what a human nervous system does at four in the morning.

So the absence of a report is a fact about the hour. It is not a fact about the value of what happened in it, and it is very much not a fact about you.

You are as lit in a corridor at four in the morning as anybody who ever got a letter about it afterwards. Hebrews 6:10 makes God the one who remembers and never makes the remembering conditional on anybody else's testimony, and the same Spirit who inspired that sentence is not weighing your twenty years against somebody else's mail.

And I am not going to promise you that you are told. Not by a certain age, not before you go, not at all. A few people do hear something at some point. Most people do not, and the two groups are not being valued differently, they simply had different luck with phone calls.

What I will say is that the not knowing has never once been the same thing as the not landing.

You were there, and the being there is the finished thing and not the opening of something you were supposed to see through. That is why the written word calls it work and labor already shown, in the completed tense, and His Spirit does not reopen a file God has already closed and kept.

The breakthrough

So here is the place where you expect me to tell you to keep going.

I am not going to. Keep going is a task, and if I hand you a task tonight then this whole thing turns into another shift on a schedule, and you have quite enough of those. Go on with it or do not go on with it. Nobody in this is counting your nights and there is no total anywhere with your name at the top of it.

It is already settled, and the settling never needed a report to be complete. Hebrews 6:10 states the remembering as something God does because of who He is, and the written word attaches no condition to it anywhere in the verse. The Holy Spirit is not holding the matter open pending information from a family in another town.

I want you to hear something about that notebook, too.

Nine hundred names with no endings is not a record of failure. It is not even really an unfinished thing. It is a list of nine hundred nights that a human being was not alone in, and every single one of those nights actually happened, in the world, at a real hour, on real chairs, and no amount of never hearing back reaches into the past and undoes one of them.

You have a God who calls that notebook a labor of love and does not lose a page of it. Those are the written word's own words, work and labor of love shown toward His name, and His Spirit does not file it in a drawer marked probably fine. He keeps it, and He keeps it in full, with all the endings you never got.

And on the nights it feels like nothing, when you are driving home at ten past six and the whole thing seems like a long series of rooms you sat in for no reason, the supply is unaffected. Feeling like nothing and being nothing are two different things, and only one of them is real.

Declare this over yourself

Out loud, in the car or the kitchen, at whatever volume the hour allows. The right to say these is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority underneath the words is His and delegated to you, never worked up out of your own long service; His Spirit is what makes them live, and not how many nights you have done. Say them and then leave the outcome to Him, because what He shows you and when is His to decide and never a deadline you set. Faith is the open hand that receives. It has never been the price.

  1. Corridor at four in the morning, you are two blue chairs and a clock that clicks. Hebrews 6:10 says God is not unrighteous to forget the work and the labor of love, and He has the ending of every night I ever sat through. I am not the one who keeps the record, and I never was.
  2. Idea that it all came to nothing, get out of this car in the name of Jesus. Nine hundred nights happened in the world at a real hour on real chairs, and the written word calls that a labor of love shown toward His name. I am a fire somebody took a bearing off, and I always was.
  3. God, You do not forget, and You would have to stop being righteous to start. I thank You that You are holding nine hundred endings I was never given and never needed. I am saying one name out loud and leaving it with You, and that is what I am doing now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
