Nine forty-three, and Gabe is standing in the wings on the left side of the stage with a black curtain against his shoulder.
From here he can see two things. The blue lights on the tech booth desk out across the dark, and the top rim of the drum kit catching the house lights that are still up. Sound check was at eight. The room is filling, and it has that low sound a room makes when three hundred people are all saying something quiet at once.
He has been doing this for nine years.
And in nine years he has always, every single Sunday, walked up those three steps carrying something.
It was never necessarily a big thing. Some weeks it was a verse that had gotten hold of him on Wednesday and would not let go. Some weeks it was one line, one image, the shape of something. Some weeks it was a person, just a name he was carrying up there in his chest without telling anybody. Once it was nothing but a phrase his daughter said at breakfast. But there was always something in his hands on the way up the steps.
This morning there is nothing.
He checked. That is the part he cannot get past. On the drive in he went through the week deliberately, on purpose, Monday to Saturday, looking for it the way you pat your pockets at a door. Monday, nothing. Tuesday, nothing. He got all the way to Saturday night and there was nothing there.
And there is no story to go with it. No fight at home. No sin he is sitting on. Nobody is sick. He is sleeping fine. It is not a crisis and it does not have a shape, and that is somehow worse, because at least a crisis would explain it.
In the car his wife asked if he was okay and he said yes, and that was true, and it was also not the answer to any question either of them was actually asking.
Nine years he has done one thing at this door. He puts his palm flat on the wall beside the stage entrance for a second before he goes on. He does not know why he started and he has never told anybody he does it.
He does it now. And this morning the wall is a wall.
Petra comes past with a stick in each hand, nineteen years old, hair up, already half in it.
"You good?"
"Yeah," Gabe says.
"Cool." She digs in her pocket, hands him a stick of gum without breaking stride, and goes on up.
He stands there one more second with the curtain against his shoulder and the gum in his hand.
"I've got nothing to bring," he says, out loud, to nobody at all.
What a branch is not doing
There is a sentence Jesus says about vines that people quote a great deal and almost always cut in half.
The half everybody knows is the encouraging half. Here is the whole of it.
I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever remains in me and I in him bears much fruit; for apart from me you can do nothing.John 15:5
Look at where the fruit is credited. It is not credited to the branch. The branch is where the fruit shows up, and that is a different thing entirely from where the fruit comes from, and Jesus is precise about the difference.
And look at the verb given to the branch. Remains. Abides. Stays. It is a verb of position and it is not a verb of effort. A branch does not grip the vine. A branch has never once tightened its hold, or concentrated, or applied itself to being attached. It is attached because that is where it grew, and it will be attached this afternoon whether or not it has a good morning.
You are a branch on a vine, and a branch has never had to manufacture one drop of what runs through it. John 15:5 puts the fruit on the vine's account and never on the branch's, and it is written that way deliberately, and the Holy Spirit is not standing in the wings asking you to press harder before ten o'clock.
Now go to the last clause, the blunt one that nobody prints on anything.
Apart from me you can do nothing.
You have found out by experience this morning what Jesus said in advance, and that discovery is not a failure. It is the final clause of John 15:5, written flat, with no exception in it for people who have been faithful nine years, and the Spirit is not treating a Sunday like this one as a fall. He is treating it as a sentence landing.
Empty was always the reading on that gauge
Here is the model you have been running, and I do not think anybody ever handed it to you on purpose.
The model is that you are a container. Through the week you take on a supply, and on Sunday you carry it up three steps and pour it out over three hundred people, and if the supply is good the morning is good. Nine years of that mostly working is exactly what makes this morning feel like a collapse.
But that model is not in the verse anywhere.
The verse has a vine, a branch, and sap. The branch is not a container and it has no inventory. It has never once been holding a reserve. There is no tank in a branch, which is why there is nothing in a branch to run out, and that was equally true on the best Sunday you ever had.
The difference between that Sunday and this one is not the size of your stock. It is what you happened to notice.
You are attached this morning, and attachment is a location rather than a feeling you produce. The written word makes abiding a matter of where a branch is and never of how hard it is working at it, and the Spirit is not out there scoring how full you feel at seventeen minutes to ten.
And I want to say something about the emptiness itself, because there is a whole industry of well-meant advice aimed at people in your position and most of it will make this worse.
I am not going to hand you a way to top yourself up before the downbeat. There is no exercise here, no four things to do in the wings, no way to get the tank reading differently in the next eleven minutes. That is the container model again with a better technique bolted onto it, and it would just teach you to blame the technique next time.
And I am not going to tell you when this will feel different. I do not know. Nobody who tells you a date knows either, and a date is the cruelest thing you can hand a person in an empty season, because when it passes they conclude the problem is them.
What I will tell you is what the vine is doing in a season with no fruit on it, which is exactly what it does in every other season. The sap does not observe the calendar. A vine in the cold months is not a failing vine, and a branch resting is not a branch dimming, and nobody in the history of agriculture has ever walked out to a vineyard in winter and pronounced the whole thing dead because it was quiet.
You have nothing to bring, and nothing to bring was always the actual arrangement, including on all the mornings it went well. John 15:5 says apart from Me you can do nothing, in writing, with no clause exempting the experienced, and the same Spirit who carried the last nine years is not waiting on your inventory this morning.
So there is nothing being asked of you before the downbeat.
Not a prayer to get right, not a posture to adopt in the wings, not a mindset, not a quick repentance to clear the line, not a way of holding this that will make the next eleven minutes work better. If you have been reading with one eye out for the fix, you can stop. There is no fix in this, because there is nothing broken in the place you have been looking.
You have nothing to take up this morning, and the thing being handed to you was already true when you put your palm on that wall. The word said it first, and it said it in the plainest sentence in the chapter, and what the Spirit adds now is that it is about you, standing in a wing with a stick of gum in your hand.
And the sentence you said to nobody a minute ago is not a confession of failure. It is an accurate reading of a branch, said out loud by a man who has been carrying a job description that was never issued to him.
You were never the supply, not on the best Sunday of the nine years, and you are not less attached this morning than you were on that one. That is what the written word means when it puts the fruit on the vine and the position on the branch, and the Spirit is agreeing with it right now, three steps below a stage, with the house lights still up.
Declare this over yourself
Say them out loud, in the wings or the truck or the kitchen, at whatever volume the room allows. The right to speak this way is not energy and it is not technique. It is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority under these words is His and never your own; the Holy Spirit is what makes them live in a man with nothing in his hands. So say them plainly, and leave the outcome to Him.
- Wings of a stage at seventeen to ten, you are not a stockroom. Nobody has ever taken inventory of a branch, and John 15:5 says the fruit belongs to the vine and the staying belongs to me. Nine years of walking up those steps, and my hands have been empty the whole time.
- Verdict that empty means finished, get out. In the name of Jesus you do not get this doorway and you do not get the next eleven minutes, because the written word says apart from Him I can do nothing and never once made an exception for a good week. I am the hose, and there was nothing in me to run out.
- Lord, You are the vine and I am attached to You this morning by where I am and not by how I feel about it. I thank You that the sap keeps no calendar and a quiet season is not a dead one. I am walking up these steps with nothing to bring, and You are the One who has carried every Sunday of the nine years.
