Six o'clock, and there are four of them at the table and the radio is on because somebody worked out years ago that the radio helps. Her boy has his homework at the end where the sauce bottle usually goes and he is not doing any of it. Her daughter is eating with one hand and scrolling with the other and nobody says anything about it, because that is one of the many things nobody says anything about in this house.
Her father is at the head of the table where he has always sat. He is not shouting. He has never shouted. He simply arrives in a room and the temperature of it goes down about four degrees, and everybody adjusts without discussing it, the way you shift your weight on a boat.
She moved back in eighteen months ago with two children and four bin bags, and she is thirty-four years old, and there is no other option and she has done the sums more times than she can count. So she butters bread and she keeps the radio on and she is careful, all the time, endlessly careful, and by half past seven she is so tired she could lie down on the kitchen floor.
And the thought that frightens her most is not about him. It is about her. She used to be a warm person. She can remember being one. And she has started to wonder whether a person can be in a cold room for long enough that the cold gets into them, and whether it has already happened, and whether her children would even know.
You live somewhere you cannot get out of. Maybe a house, maybe a shift, maybe a marriage that has gone silent. And the question underneath your week is not how to fix the place. It is whether the place is quietly winning.
The fear underneath the tiredness
Let me name the real one, because it is not the atmosphere and it is not the father at the head of the table. The real fear is that whatever God put in you runs on the room, and the room has been out for a long while.
That fear is worth taking seriously, because everything in a hard household trains you to believe it. Your mood tracks the front door. Your shoulders know his car. And a person who has been reading a room for eighteen months eventually starts reading themselves the same way, and takes the temperature of the kitchen as though it were a report on their own soul.
So let us put one line of John's up against it. It is eight words in most translations and it settles the whole question.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.John 1:5
Notice what it does not say. It does not say the light shines until the darkness gets bad enough. It does not say the light shines in the good rooms. It says the darkness has not overcome it, in the past tense, as a matter already tried and already settled. You are not running on that kitchen, and I am not saying that to cheer you up, it is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who makes a tired woman able to hold it while she butters bread.
And name the fear plainly, because a fear you can see is already smaller. You are not slowly going out. John 1:5 does not describe a light that dims in proportion to the room, it describes darkness that has already failed to overcome it, written in a settled tense. The Spirit is not measuring how much of you is left at six o'clock; He is the supply that the six o'clock never touched.
What was never wired to the walls
There is a scene in Exodus that is worth having in your head at dinner time. Egypt goes dark, and the text is oddly specific: a darkness so thick that nobody could see anybody else, and nobody got up for three days. And then one line. But all the people of Israel had light in their dwellings.
Not light instead of the darkness outside. Light in the dwellings, inside it, while it was still going on out there. The dark did not have to lift for the lamps to work, because the lamps were never running off the dark's permission in the first place.
That is what has been true of you since the day God lit you. He set you in that house already burning, and the burning was never plugged into anything in it. Scripture says the light of the world is Christ and that He is in you, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a thing lit that a room never lit in the first place. Nobody at that table has the switch.
Now hear the two things this piece is not about to do to you, because a message like this can go wrong in two directions and both of them cost women like you. The written word does not lean either way, and neither does His Spirit.
The first is that nobody here is telling you to shine harder. There is no target coming, no talk to have with your father, no atmosphere you are responsible for changing. You have been carrying the weather of that house for eighteen months as though the forecast were your job, and it never was. What is in you does not need topping up by you.
The second is that nobody here is telling you to be pleased about it. Staying somewhere hard is not romantic and I will not dress it up as a calling. It is simply where you are this year, and God is in it with you, and Scripture never once described a hard house as a compliment. His Spirit is not asking you to enjoy it. He is with you in it.
And one thing that is not negotiable, so I will say it plainly and then move on. If anybody in that house frightens you, or a hand has been raised, or you are being controlled, that is a different situation and it needs a different answer than a message about lamps. Tell someone today who can act: your doctor, a domestic abuse helpline in your country, the police if it is urgent. In the United States that is 911. Nothing in this article asks you to stay in a place that is not safe, and God has never asked that of anybody either.
So take the plain fact back into the evening with you. You are carrying a light that was never wired to that house, and nothing in that room has been given the authority to switch it off. John 1:5 is written in the settled past for exactly this reason. The Spirit who put that light in you does not draw current from the mood at your table.
So put the question down. The one about whether the cold has got into you.
The dark in that kitchen has not put you out and it has not got the equipment. You are lit, at six o'clock tonight, in that room, with that radio on, and the light in you is Christ's own and not a mood you have to keep up. That is the written word and not a hopeful reading of your situation, and His Spirit is the one holding it steady in a woman who is far too tired to hold anything.
Your children are not watching a cold woman. They are watching the only warm thing in that house, and she is worrying she has gone out.
So receive it as a fact about tonight rather than a hope about next year. You have a light in you that the room did not give and the room cannot take. John 1:5 put it in the settled past, the darkness has not overcome it, and it is written that way because the question was closed long before you ever moved back into that house. The Spirit does not need anybody at that table to agree before He keeps it burning.
Declare this over yourself
Say these in the kitchen if you can, or on the stairs, quietly. You were given the right to say them the day God lit you, and Scripture is what holds the words up rather than the state of that house tonight. Nothing here commands anybody in your family and nothing here forecasts anything: leave the outcome of that house entirely with Him. The Holy Spirit is the light. You are the lamp.
- Darkness in this kitchen at six o'clock, you have not put me out and you have not got the equipment. Scripture says the light shines in the dark and the dark has not overcome it, and has not is a door that was shut a long time ago. Sit at that table as long as you like, you are not what I run on.
- Habit of reading the room to find out how I am, in the name of Jesus I am taking my hands off you. God set me in this house already lit, and the lamp He lit was never wired into these walls. Christ is in me, and what is in me does not go down when the temperature does.
- Father, You put me in this house and You lit me before I ever came through that door, and the keeping of it has not once depended on anybody at that table. I am not waiting for the room to change before I am who You made, and Your Spirit is the light in me rather than the mood in here. Kettle, you go on at half past six, and somebody in this kitchen is getting a cup of tea they never asked for.
