Helen goes up the lane for the mail at about four, when the light starts going, because at four there is less chance of meeting anybody.
She would not say that out loud. She would say she goes at four because that is when the mail comes, which is also true, and one of those two reasons has been quietly running her afternoons for nine years.
The lane is wet stone wall on one side and a hedge on the other, and it takes four minutes, and there are eleven houses on it.
Nobody is rude to her. That is the part that is hard to explain to anybody who was not there. Everyone says hello. Everyone comments on the weather and means it. If her car would not start, three people would come out, and they would be kind, and they would do it properly, and then they would go back inside.
It is just that in 2016 the family at the top of the lane decided something about her, over a thing to do with a right of way and a hedge and a letter that was read in a way it was not meant, and the decision was made in a kitchen she was not in, and she has never once been told exactly what was said in it.
She was on the hall committee. She is not now. Nobody removed her. The meetings moved to Wednesdays and she found out in the store.
She was in the phone group for the school pickups. She is not now. The group was remade for a new year and she was not added back, and it was probably nobody's decision at all, which is somehow worse.
So the lane is polite. That is the exact word for it. Polite and cold, for nine years, up and back, four minutes each way.
And here is what she has been doing about it, and she is not proud of it and she would not defend it. She has been going smaller. Quieter voice at the door. Fewer words at the counter. She stopped bringing anything to the hall the year after, in case it was awkward, and then she stopped going, and now she does not know whether they think she is stuck up, and she cannot ask.
At the mailbox this afternoon there is a leaflet and a bill and nothing else.
Coming back down, the cloud breaks a little over the field and the whole lane goes gold for about eight seconds, the wet wall and the hedge and the puddles all at once, and Helen stops walking without deciding to.
She could not tell you why her eyes went. She is fifty-six and she has not cried on that lane before.
What He said about the room you cannot leave
On the last night, in an upstairs room, with everything about to happen, Jesus says a sentence to His friends that nobody would put on a poster.
He tells them the world is going to be hard on them. He does not soften it, He does not promise them a different world, and He does not tell any of them to go somewhere else.
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.John 16:33
There are two locations in that sentence and both of them are true at the same time. In the world: pressure, friction, cold. In Me: peace. He does not say the first one ends. He says where the second one lives.
You are in two places at once, and you were in both of them before you noticed the second. I am not saying that to make the lane easier. John 16:33 is written, it names the trouble out loud instead of pretending it away, and the Holy Spirit is what makes the second half of a sentence like that land on a woman standing at a mailbox in the rain.
Now here is a thing about fire that everybody knows and almost nobody applies to themselves.
A cold room does not put out a flame. Cold is not a fire's enemy. Cold is what a fire is for. A candle in a warm room and a candle in a freezing hall burn exactly the same, because the only things that put a light out are the supply being cut and the air being taken away, and neither of those is in the gift of a village.
You have not been put out by nine years of that lane, and you were never within reach of being put out by it. Second Corinthians 4:8 says pressed on every side and not crushed, cast down and not destroyed, and the written word puts those in pairs on purpose. The Spirit is not asking you to feel warm. He is telling you what is still burning.
And one plain thing before we go on, because it matters more than anything else here. If what is happening around you has stopped being coldness and started being frightening, please tell somebody today who can actually do something about it, a doctor, the police, a helpline, one person you trust. Staying put is not the holy option when you are not safe, and going somewhere safe would not put you out.
Nothing on that lane has jurisdiction
A verdict was passed on Helen in a kitchen in 2016.
Look at what that verdict can actually reach. It can reach a committee. It can reach a phone group, a seating arrangement in a hall, the temperature of a conversation at a counter. Those are real losses and I am not going to be brisk about them.
Here is what it cannot reach. It cannot reach what God said about her, because it was not consulted, and it has no standing in that court, and it was not there when the ruling was made.
You were spoken over before that kitchen existed, and you were spoken over by the only voice with jurisdiction. Matthew 5:14 was said on a hillside two thousand years before anybody on your lane had an opinion, it is written and it has not been reopened, and what the Spirit adds is that no local decision was ever entered as evidence.
And notice what I am not going to ask you to do about the family at the top of the lane. I am not going to ask you to confront them, or to win them, or to have the conversation. You are not responsible for the temperature of a street you did not chill, and warming it back up is not an assignment that has been given to you.
Bless them and keep walking. That is not weakness and it is not defeat. It is what a person does who is not fighting for a verdict they already have.
You are carrying peace that the street has no access to, and it was handed to you rather than earned on the lane. John 14:27 has Him saying He gives peace not as the world gives it, which is exactly the difference: the world's peace depends on the room being warm. His does not, and the Spirit is the One who keeps that supply running four minutes up and four minutes back.
So here is what there is to receive on the way back down the lane.
Nothing was put out. Not in 2016, not in any of the nine years since, not on the worst Wednesday of them. You went quieter, and going quieter is not going dark, and a person shrinking under a cold climate is not a person failing.
You are the light of the world on that lane, and you were that on every walk up to the mailbox for nine years. Jesus said it in Matthew 5:14 to people who were about to be treated badly by their own towns, the written word left the sentence in the present tense, and the Spirit is saying it again over wet stone and a hedge and a leaflet and a bill.
You are not required to fix the street. You are not required to explain yourself to anybody. You are not behind on a conversation you have been dreading for nine years.
You have peace that does not come from the room, and it is already yours in the middle of the room. That is John 16:33, in writing, with the trouble named honestly right beside it, and the Spirit is not waiting for the lane to warm up before He agrees with it.
Be of good cheer. He said it while the room was still cold.
Declare this over yourself
Say these where you can see the lane, out loud. The authority in them is not local, and it is not something a street can grant you or take back. It is Christ's, and it has been given to you, because Christ is in you and you are in Him. What He does about the coldness is His to decide, and He answers in His own way and His own timing. You are not commanding a single neighbor here. You are speaking to a verdict.
- Lane that has been polite and cold, you are not my climate. John 16:33 says the tribulation is in the world and the peace is in Him, and I am standing in the second one. I am walking up you this afternoon lit.
- Verdict passed on me in a kitchen, get out, in the name of Jesus. You are not the word of God and you have no jurisdiction over a flame you did not light. Christ overcame the world and said so out loud, and that is the ruling that stands.
- Lord, You are the One who told them to be of good cheer while the room was still cold. Your word holds John 16:33 steady, and Your Spirit says it again on this lane at four o'clock. I am going up for the mail carrying peace the street cannot reach.
