Never Put OutPsalm 139:12

The Silence Has Its Own Weather

This message is for a home where your teenage son has stopped speaking to you and the silence has its own weather

There is a worn patch in the carpet outside Kyle's door, and Deborah is the one who wore it.

It is a small house. The landing is four steps of carpet between the bathroom and his room, and the light from under his door lies across it in a strip about the width of a ruler. She knows that strip better than she knows most of her own face. She knows what time it goes out, which is somewhere around two, and she can tell from her own bed by the way the line on the landing changes.

He is seventeen. He was fifteen when it started.

Nothing happened. That is the part she cannot explain to her sister, who keeps asking what the fight was about. There was no fight. There was no event, no discovery, no slammed door with a reason behind it. It came on the way weather comes on, and one week he was answering and the next week he was answering with one syllable, and now, four months in, he says yeah to direct questions and that is the whole of it.

She leaves a plate outside the door. It comes back empty and stacked on the floor beside the door frame, always stacked, always facing the same way, and that is the only conversation the two of them have.

She has stopped knocking. Knocking made it worse, or seemed to, and now she cannot tell whether it made it worse or whether she just needed something to blame.

So what she does instead is this. Every night, on the way past, she says, "Night, Kyle." Two words. She does not wait. She does not lean on the door. She says it in an ordinary voice, the same voice she uses for the dog, and then she goes into her room and shuts her own door, and her heart goes like a bird for a minute or two, every night, four months running.

He has never once answered.

Except that in February she had a bad chest cold and went to bed at eight without going past his room, and at eleven o'clock his door opened, and he stood in the hallway in the light with his hair stuck up on one side, and said, "You all right?"

And she said yes.

And he said, "Okay," and went back in, and shut it.

That is the whole story. That is all of it. It has not happened again. She has thought about that eleven o'clock about four hundred times since, and she still has no idea what to do with it, and every night she says the two words anyway and every night the light under the door stays exactly where it is.

Read who the darkness is dark to

There is a psalm where a man goes looking, honestly and quite systematically, for somewhere God is not.

He tries heaven. He tries the grave. He tries the wings of the morning and the far side of the sea. Then he tries the last one, the one that seems most likely to work, because it is the one every human being has felt would work.

Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.Psalm 139:12

Now read what it does not say.

It does not say the darkness lifts. It does not say the night ends by Thursday. It says the night is not dark to Him, which is a completely different promise, and it is the one that was actually made.

I am not going to hand you the other one. I have no idea whether that door opens next month or next year, and any preacher who tells you they do is selling you something out of their own anxiety. What the verse gives you is better than a forecast anyway. It tells you what God sees when He looks at your landing at two in the morning, and the answer is: everything, in full daylight, with nothing obscured.

You are standing in a hallway that is not dark to God, and it never was. Psalm 139:12 says the night shines as the day to Him, written in the present tense and left there, and the Spirit is what carries a written line up a staircase and sets it down beside a woman at eleven o'clock.

Before we go on, one plain thing, and I would rather say it and not need it. If what is happening in that house has stopped being silence and started being danger, to you or to him, please tell somebody today who can actually help. Staying is not the holy option when somebody is not safe, and walking out of a room would not put your light out.

You have not been put out, and nothing in that house has the power to do it. Psalm 139 is one long argument that there is no location, condition or hour where God has to go looking, and His Spirit is not a supply that a closed door can interrupt.

A light does not measure itself by what comes back

Here is why the hallway feels like failure, and it is worth naming exactly.

Every ordinary human way of knowing you matter is a reply. A face turns toward you. Somebody laughs, or argues, or asks where the charger is. That is how a person checks. And for four months you have had one syllable and an empty plate, and with no return signal the mind does the only thing it knows how to do with silence, which is fill it in. It never fills it in kindly.

So let me take one thing off you that was never yours.

You did not make that silence. Whatever is going on inside a seventeen year old is going on inside a seventeen year old, and there are things happening in him that he could not explain to you if he wanted to, because he cannot explain them to himself yet. You are not the weather system. You are a person standing in it, which is an entirely different job, and the second one is not a failure at the first.

You are lit in a hallway with a closed door in it, and the door does not get a vote on that. The written word puts the whole matter of light and dark on God's side of the line in Psalm 139:12, not on the room's side, and the Spirit says the same thing again tonight in your own house.

And notice what a lamp is not doing while it is lit. It is not checking. There is no lamp anywhere that dims itself because the room did not respond well. Its output is not a function of acknowledgement, and it never has been.

You were not put out by four months of silence, and you were never going to be. Scripture puts it beyond debate: the darkness and the light are both alike to Him. What the Spirit adds is that this is about your landing and your carpet and your two words, and not about darkness in general.

The breakthrough

So we come to the place where you expect the instruction, and I want to be careful with you here, because this category is where a task gets smuggled in wearing the clothes of hope.

I am not going to tell you to keep saying the two words. Say them or do not say them. They are not a technique and they are not a lever, and the moment they become either one you will start measuring them, and then a small tender thing you do out of love becomes another line on the list you are already failing.

I am not going to tell you to knock, or not to knock. I am not going to tell you to sit him down. I am not going to tell you what February meant, because I do not know, and neither does anybody else.

It is already settled that you are light in that house, and the settling never consulted the hallway. Psalm 139:12 hands the whole question of darkness over to God and keeps it there, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting on a change in your son to make an established thing established.

Here is what is actually true of that landing tonight. There is a woman on it who is loved, seen in full daylight by the God who wrote that psalm, and lit by Christ rather than by any answer she has received. There is a boy behind a door that God is looking straight through, without effort, without strain, and without the slightest difficulty in seeing him.

You have a Father who reads that whole landing at two in the morning, and He is not squinting. That is the written word's own picture, the night shining as the day, and His Spirit does not soften it into a wish. He keeps it a fact in a house where facts have been thin on the ground for four months.

And on the nights the silence has its own weather and you can feel it in the walls, the supply is unaffected. Feeling put out and being put out are two different things, and only one of them is real.

Declare this over yourself

Out loud, in the hallway or the kitchen or the car, at whatever volume the hour allows. The right to say these belongs to you because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority underneath them is His and delegated, never worked up out of your own strength; His Spirit is what makes them live in you, and not how steady your voice stays. Say them and then leave the outcome to Him, because what happens in that house and when is His to decide, and never a deadline you set. Faith is the open hand that receives. It has never been the price of anything.

  1. Hallway outside a closed door, you are carpet and a light switch and you are not a verdict on my house. Psalm 139:12 says the night shines like the day to God and the darkness and the light are both alike to Him, and that is true of this landing at two in the morning. I am lit where I am standing, and the silence has no say in it.
  2. Idea that I am the reason it went quiet, get out of this house in the name of Jesus. I did not make the weather in a seventeen year old and I was never the supply he runs on, and the written word puts light and darkness alike on God's side of the line. I am a woman standing in it, and I am kept.
  3. Father, You see straight through that door with no effort at all, and I thank You that You are looking at him right now with nothing obscured. You called me light before one word came back to me, and You have not amended it since. I am going to bed in a house You are already awake in, and that is what I am doing now.
