Third Row, After The Chairs Are Stacked

This message is for standing in the third row on a Friday night while the whole room lifts, knowing you are the one who stacks the chairs afterward and never the one anybody would call a light

A hundred and twelve chairs go out on a Friday night at the hall on Ellery Street, and Yvonne is the one who knows the number, because she is the one who puts them back.

She comes at ten to seven with the key on a piece of blue string. She fills the urn. She sets the chairs in nine rows with an aisle down the middle, wide enough for the man who comes in the walker, and she leaves the end seat of the back row empty, because somebody always arrives late and hates being looked at.

By eight the room has lifted. The keyboard is going, the drummer's brother is on the tambourine, and there is a sound in that hall on a good night that gets into the plaster. Yvonne stands third row, left side, by the pillar. She sings every word. She has meant every word for nineteen years.

At half past nine the pastor thanks the ones who carried the meeting. He names the worship team. He names the woman who stood up and spoke and made a grown man cry into his hands. He names the young father who prayed over the back that had been bad since March. Yvonne claps until her palms sting, and she is glad, genuinely glad, no acid in it anywhere.

Then the room empties the way a room does, in twos and threes and one long conversation by the door.

Yvonne stacks. Eight to a stack, because nine tips. She wheels the cart into the closet under the stage. She rinses the urn and stands it upside down on the towel. She goes along the switches by the fire door and takes the lights out in sections, back to front, the way you do.

A boy is still there. Sixteen maybe, in a school hoodie, came with his aunt, sat at the back and did not sing. He picks up a stack without being asked and follows her to the closet and asks where these go and whether the cart has a brake on it.

That is the whole conversation.

He is there again the next Friday, and he comes and finds Yvonne before he finds a seat. And the Friday after that. He still does not sing much. He stacks chairs.

Driving home with the key on the blue string swinging off the ignition, Yvonne says it out loud to nobody, the way people say the heaviest things lightly.

"I am not a light. I am the one who stacks the chairs."

She has been saying some version of that to herself since she was nineteen, and not once has anybody been in the car to argue with her about it.

Look at whose hands do the opening

There is a sentence Paul carried out of the worst day of his life, and it repays reading slowly, because every verb in it belongs to somebody other than the people it is about.

To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.Acts 26:18

Read it for the hands. Who opens the eyes. Who does the turning. Who hands over the inheritance. Not one of those verbs lands on the person being described. They are on the receiving end of every single one.

That matters more than it looks, because most of us were taught the light business backwards. We think of light as output. Something a believer produces, on a scale, and the scale runs from the woman at the front who made a grown man cry into his hands all the way down to the third row by the pillar. We think we are being measured in lumens.

Paul is not describing output. He is describing relocation. Turned from darkness to light, the way somebody carries a sleeping child from the car into the house at midnight. The child does not assist.

You are already on the light side of that sentence, and somebody else's hands carried you over. I am not saying it to be kind to you. It stands written in Acts 26:18 as the commission Jesus handed a man on a road, and the Holy Spirit does not talk a person into a fact like that. He seats it. Usually while she is rinsing an urn.

Then there is the last word of the verse, which is the one nobody preaches. Inheritance. Not wage. Not bonus. Not the little framed thing they hand the volunteer of the year at the harvest supper.

An inheritance comes to you because of who you are related to. A will is not a performance review. Nobody in the history of the world has inherited a house by trying harder than their sister.

You have an inheritance among the ones who are made holy, and an inheritance was never a wage. That is the written word's own word for it, sitting in the same breath as the light, and the same Spirit who put it in Paul's mouth is not finished with it. He makes an old legal term go warm in a woman's chest on the drive home.

Nobody in that hall lit themselves

The strip lights over the Ellery Street hall are not competing. There is no bulb halfway down the room glowing anxiously because it heard something over the weekend about brightness. Every one of them is doing the only thing a lit thing does, which is be lit, and the difference between the ones near the platform and the ones by the pillar is where the electrician stood on the ladder.

When Jesus said the sentence, He said it on a hillside, sitting down, to whoever had walked over that morning. Fishermen. Farmers. Women with children on their hips. A few who had come for the free opinion and stayed because the weather was good. Not one of them had a platform. Not one had done a thing about it yet. He said it first, over all of them, in the flat present tense, before a single result came in.

You are the light of the world in the third row, and the row was never part of the sentence. Matthew 5:14 said it first, over people who had walked in from villages nobody has heard of since, and the Spirit says it again on a Friday night to a woman with a cart and a key on a piece of blue string.

Which means the chairs are not the consolation prize.

Think about what a hundred and twelve chairs actually are. They are the reason a hundred and twelve people had somewhere to sit while the room lifted. The man with the walker had an aisle wide enough because somebody thought about him at ten to seven. The woman who hates being looked at had the end seat of the back row, empty, waiting, because somebody knew that about her and never made her ask.

None of that is small. It is only unannounced. And unannounced is not the same thing as unlit, however long you have had those two words filed together.

You were lit before the first chord of the first song, and the lighting was not your work. Scripture puts the lighting in God's hands from the first morning of the world right through to this one. What His Spirit adds is that it is about you personally, and not about believers in general.

The breakthrough

Now, here is the part you have been braced for.

You know the one. The fact gets established, everybody nods, and then somewhere in the last third it quietly turns into a task, and you leave with a new thing to do for God and the old familiar weight back across your shoulders.

It is not coming. There is no target in this. No count, no conversation you are supposed to start with the boy in the hoodie, no schedule, nothing to say to anybody at work on Monday, and no way to be behind.

It is already settled, and it was settled without a single vote from you. Acts 26:18 has God opening eyes and moving people out of the dark, all of it in verbs that were never yours to conjugate, and the Holy Spirit is not asking your permission before He agrees with what is written.

Feeling ordinary and being unlit are two different things, and only one of them is real. On a Friday night when the room lifts and something in you stays flat on the floor, the supply is unaffected. Lamps do not go dim from being tired of themselves.

You have nothing to catch up on tonight and nothing to add to what Christ has already done in you. The written word ties the shining in a human heart straight back to the God who said let there be light in the first place, and His Spirit keeps that circuit closed whether the week went well or went badly.

So the only thing that has happened here is that a sentence you have been quietly graded by got handed back to you as what it always was. A fact. About you. Spoken first.

Declare this over yourself

Out loud, now. Not in your head, where every verdict you have ever passed on yourself gets a vote. The right to say these belongs to you because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority underneath them is His, delegated, never worked up out of your own chest; His Spirit is what makes them live, and not the volume you manage. Say them on the nights you feel nothing at all, and then leave the outcome to Him, because what He does with them and when is His to decide and never a deadline you set. Faith is the open hand that receives. It was never the price.

  1. Third row on a Friday night, you are a seat and not a verdict. Acts 26:18 says God opens eyes and turns people out of the dark into the light, and He did that to me before I ever carried a chair across a floor. I am standing in the light He moved me into, and the row has nothing to say about it.
  2. Idea that I am only the furniture, get out of my chest in the name of Jesus. The written word hands me an inheritance among the ones who are made holy, and an inheritance is not a wage anybody earns. I am named in the will, and I always was.
  3. Lord Jesus, You called me light on a hillside before I had done one thing about it, and I am not arguing with You tonight. You opened my eyes when I could not have opened them myself, and I thank You for it. I am stacking these chairs with Your light on me, and that is what I am doing now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
