At three in the morning the corridor on ward four is the color of weak tea and the floor polisher has left long streaks that catch the light from the nurses' station, and Danny stands in it for about forty seconds every night, roughly halfway through, because it is the only place on the ward where nobody is looking at him.
He is a healthcare assistant. He signed for three years to get the training paid for, and if he goes before the three years are up he pays the whole of it back, and he does not have the whole of it, and he is never going to have the whole of it while he is doing this job. So it is three more years. He has done fourteen months. He can tell you the number of shifts without doing arithmetic, which is not a thing he is proud of.
Here is the part that is hard to explain to anybody outside the building.
Nobody is cruel to him. That is what makes it impossible to describe. There is no incident. There is nothing anybody would write down. What there is, is a decision that got made about him somewhere around week two, when he was new and slow and he got a name wrong in handover and said sorry too many times, and the decision was: he is not really one of us. It was not malicious. It was five tired people forming an impression on a Tuesday, and then the impression set like concrete and nobody has revisited it since, because why would they. They have their own lives. It was fourteen months ago. To them it is not even a thought. To him it is the weather.
So he gets talked past. He gets the jobs nobody signs up for. When he says something at the desk there is a small half beat before anybody answers, and then somebody answers about something else. When the agency staff come in they figure out the ranking within about an hour and they slot in above him without meaning anything by it. Twice he has heard a joke go around the station that he was sure was about him and he cannot prove it and he decided not to think about it and then thought about it in his car for twenty minutes.
And he is good at the job. That is the other thing.
At two forty he was in bay three with Mrs. Adler, who is eighty eight and frightened at night and does not remember from one evening to the next that she has met him. He sat on the low chair beside her and said, it is Danny, I am here for a while, and she said, oh, Danny, as if he were somebody she had known for years, and gripped his hand with the surprising strength that people that age have. He stayed eleven minutes. He talked about nothing. She went back to sleep still holding two of his fingers and he waited another minute after that before he took them back.
Then he came out into the corridor with the streaks on the floor and stood in the one spot where nobody is looking at him and thought, quite calmly, the way you think a thing you have thought many times: three more years of this and there will be nothing left of me.
What the fire does not get to do
There is a sentence in Isaiah written to people who were going somewhere they had not chosen and could not get out of, and it does not promise them the road will be different. Read what it actually says.
When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.Isaiah 43:2
Through. Not around, not instead of, not out of. The water is still water and the fire is still fire and the promise is placed inside them rather than in place of them. And then the specific thing: the flame does not kindle on you. It burns. It just does not catch.
You are lit on ward four at three in the morning, and you were lit in month one when nobody had decided anything yet. I am not saying that to make the shift easier to swallow. Isaiah 43:2 is written and it stands, and Jesus said in Matthew 5:14 that you are the light of the world, and neither line was issued on the condition that the room agree. The Holy Spirit is not taking the temperature of the nurses' station before He decides what is true about you.
Now here is the thing about a decision that got made about a person in week two.
It is real. It affects the shift. It changes who gets asked to do what and how long the half beat is before somebody answers. It is not imaginary and you are not sensitive. What it is not, and has never been, is a verdict about the light. Five tired people on a Tuesday formed an impression, and an impression is a thing human beings do all day long, and it has exactly no jurisdiction over what God did in a person.
You have a light in you that nothing on that schedule has authority over. Colossians 3:3 says your life is hid with Christ in God, which means the real thing about you is not stored on that ward and cannot be assessed there. Scripture put that out of reach. What the Spirit does is make an old written line land in a corridor at three in the morning, in a person who is not sure he is going to make it.
Nothing on that ward is holding the switch
I want to be careful here, because there is a version of this message that tells you to hold on and shine anyway, and that version is a lie dressed as encouragement. It puts the whole weight back on the man in the corridor and calls it faith.
You are not the source. You never were. The light in you is not a supply you are running down over fourteen months of night shifts and it is not something you have to protect by being stronger than the room. It came from Christ, it stays lit because of Christ, and the maintenance is not on your side of the ledger. That is why the flame does not kindle. Not because the person walking through is fireproof. Because of who is walking through it with them.
And one plain thing needs saying before we go on. If what is happening on that ward has stopped being coldness and started being harm, if you are being bullied, threatened, touched, or put in danger, please tell somebody today who can actually do something about it: your union, occupational health, a manager outside your own team, or whoever your workplace gives you for exactly this. Staying is not the holy option when you are not safe, and leaving would not put you out. Nothing in this message is asking you to endure that.
But most of what Danny is carrying is not that. It is coldness. It is the half beat. It is fourteen months of being a person nobody revised their opinion about.
You were seen at two forty in bay three, and you were seen every other night nobody was watching. Matthew 5:16 says the light is seen and the Father is glorified, and the order in that written line matters, because the seeing was never assigned to your colleagues. The Spirit is not waiting for the nurses' station to notice before He agrees with what is already true.
So here is the turn, and it does not involve the ward changing.
Nothing has to change on that schedule for the thing under your ribs to come out. The room is not holding the switch. It never had the switch. It formed an impression, which is what rooms do, and it has been running on that impression for fourteen months, and all of that can be completely true at the same time as the fact that the light is not theirs to dim.
It is already settled, and it was settled before you signed anything. Isaiah 43:2 says the flame does not kindle on you, and it is written in the present indicative of a God who does not renegotiate. The Spirit is not building that. He is agreeing with it, in a corridor, at three in the morning, with the polisher streaks catching the light.
And the sentence you thought calmly, three more years of this and there will be nothing left of me, is not a prophecy. It is exhaustion doing arithmetic, and exhaustion has always been terrible at arithmetic.
You have three more years and you are lit for every one of them, and the second half of that is not a consolation for the first. His word said you are the light of the world and put no clause in it about the room you are standing in. The same Spirit who was in bay three at two forty is the One who is there on shift four hundred and something, and He is not rationing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car, or in the corridor if the corridor is empty. The authority in them is not the authority of somebody who is coping well, and it does not go up on the nights you feel strong. It is Christ's, and it is yours because you are in Christ and Christ is in you, which is something His word settled and no schedule can review. What He does with that ward He does in His own way and on His own clock, and the outcome is His. Your part is to say back what was written first.
- Ward four at three in the morning, you are not the fire that takes me. Isaiah 43:2 says the flame does not kindle on me, and that was written down long before this contract was. I am walking through and I am still lit.
- Verdict passed on me in week two, get out, in the name of Jesus. You have run fourteen months of my nights on five tired people and a Tuesday, and you have no jurisdiction over what Christ lit. The Lord settled this before I ever put my name on that form.
- Lord, You are with me in the water and You are with me in the fire, and Your word says the flame does not catch. I am not asking You to shorten the three years. I am standing in the corridor with my hand on the wall, taking what You already gave.
